Thanks for posting, some big memories, still waiting to see a manager who is more invested in the club than Gerry was, what a genuine bloke we had back then, no soundbites to appease fans, just hard graft, a deep sense of responsibility to even pay from his own pocket and a genuine love for the Gas.
The days where all Dennis Dunford needed to do to rally the troops was talk to Radio Bristol on. a Friday night to say they were struggling with pitch conditions and groundsheets and a couple of dozen fans would be there first thing Saturday morning to help out.
An era where so many of us were all in it together in the face of adversity, from the boardroom to the terrace all as one battling for survival. I wonder what that would be like at the Mem now in 2023 where everyone was on the same side pulling in the same direction.
Good times, great memories and humbling to watch back after all these years, UTG.

Watched this on the BBC when it was first transmitted. I even saw myself leaving the Cowshed after final whistle.......it was weird to see me as a 14/15 year old again with my nice slick hairstyle 😆 🤣
Bald as a coot 35 years later!

Amazing.Watching Stuart Taylor run out,I recall his unique gait.Doug Hillard too. Thanks for posting.Ran the line at Wrexham once when Gerry was the Exeter manager briefly.Never thought he would come to us subsequently but nice how he says he felt comfortable at Rovers.

Geoff was right wasn't he!
If only someone had a time machine. Imagine the sell on and add ons we could have made in the 80's.
Spurs to pay an additional fee if Mabbs played for England and for every 100 games played for Spurs.
A sell on percentage on John Scales. We sold him for £70k and a few years later he was well over a million to Liverpool then wasn't it £4 million to Spurs?
The Presidents Club paid the wages of Steve Yates, but we couldn't afford Darren Peacock. He went on a free to Newport and then went to QPR then to Newcastle for something like £6 million!
Plus if the 50/50 was started at Twerton rather than the Mem.
We could have given the lino contact lenses to see that Foran's header was a foot over the line - how would our history have changed if that goal was given and we never got relegated to div 4 equivalent under Thompson?
Maybe later we wouldn't have bought Stefan Payne.
All ifs and buts.

The two 'what if' scenarios for me are: play offs starting a few seasons earlier, would those David Williams teams have made it, and whether had we stayed at Eastville a few seasons longer, could the Martyn and Penrice fees have bought it back? Probably not but worth reminiscing. In the video there was suggestion of building in St Anne's, just up the road from St Philip’s.

Imagine if Matt Taylor hadn’t sold out all his team mates, manager, fans and owners by shafting us for personal gain at probably our best chance of championship football for years? Imagine if Steve Lansdown wasn’t a malicious count and bought players in that window for the benefit of his team instead of sabotaging ours to keep his own fan base happy. It was all downhill from that point, until we got JB.

A lot earlier, but 99/00 was a capitulation and losing to Northampton 3-0 in 98 was just ridiculous.

I’ve always said the sliding doors moment for us was the play off loss in 95 to Huddersfield.
Had we gone up to the championship we would have likely kept Stewart, we moved back to Bristol the following year and it may have lead to some more investment and a chance of getting our act together from a commercial perspective.

It was all downhill from that point, until we got JB. Imagine we didn't appoint Martin Dobson in 1991. We only won 1 of Dobsons 12 league games in charge, losing 8 of them. When he was sacked and Denis Rofe took over we were one of the best sides in the Division from November until May it was proper promotion form. We finished 13th, 12 points off the 6th place. Just 4 more wins and we would of made the Play Offs. We could of played in the inaugural season of The Premier League.

We were better than them that day. All they had was hoof up to that lump Booth. Was it Browning who missed that open goal, or Gareth Taylor…can’t remember. Also Stewart hitting the bar. I was 13 and I remember crying my eyes out. You always get some Burke who says “we had a great day out” but it isn’t, it was a horribly day out and people should be honest! Second only to “relegation could be the best thing to happen to us, clear out the dead wood”. Yeah, you can clear out the dead wood a division higher and not have to replace it with even deader wood from a league below!

The other one my Dad references was the Malcolm Allison season (my first proper season). We won 4 on the bounce I think including the 4-0 demolition of City. Then I think we had about 5 games postponed due to ice and snow. He thinks if we didn’t have that interruption the bandwagon would have carried on. Surprised that we did go down as that was a really good team.
