Do you think there’s any possibility we can try and predict that Shrewsbury will play a certain way rather than just joey moaning about it after the game like he expects teams to play against us in a way that suits us?
I can hear the comments after the game already like “ only one team trying to play football”, “there effective at what they do” “I wouldn’t wanna watch that every week”
Bottom line is we’re not winning enough games let’s try and counter them ffs

If you don't shoot, you don't score.
Attack wide, defend thin.
Average players in brilliant teams look good. Average players in crap sides, look crap.
Defenders, defend.
Schoolboy coach circa late 1960s.
Everything else is overcomplicating things.

Score more goals than the opposition. The rest is semantics...

I would trust him to be more tactically aware than anybody on this forum.

In the first half yesterday we often went from the edge of their final third and passed the ball slowly backwards and sideways until the ball ended up with our keeper or back four. In the second half we were far quicker in our passing movement and played far less sideways and backwards passes. I’ve watched every game this season and when we move it quickly and forwards we look a good side and when we move it slowly and backwards and sideways we’re not only dire to watch but we don’t create anything and draw or lose. It’s not rocket science and as you say Barton having the played at the top level and managed for a few years in league 1 now should see this and hopefully we’ll see less Garner ball which didn’t work then and isn’t working now and more quicker direct football which has worked for years and still works now.

That’s all correct but legs tire and space opens up as the game goes on . So it becomes easier to play ‘quicker’ in the latter stages of the game…. Like yesterday.

Very true, but when we play garner ball we don’t create much , the opposition do and we often find ourselves a goal down and then needing to come from behind to win. Yesterday shrews had quite a few good attacks in the first half that they didn’t take due to poor finishing and not being a very good side which turned out to be only half chances. We didn’t have any. We were so poor in that first half that if we’d been playing anyone decent or they’d been more clinical we’d have been chasing the game again. We played that way v Wycombe and Cambridge and found ourselves in that situation for example. I’m not saying we should go route 1 I just think that passing the ball constantly around our back four v a low block doesn’t achieve anything because the low block doesn’t move out of position and doesn’t run around much so therefore doesn’t really tire them. All of the best sides in league 1 over the years mix it up and I’ve only seen a few sides play garner ball , us under garner , Swindon a few years ago when they were relegated and again more recently under garner when they were relegated again I think shortly after sacking him ? and Mk Dons always seem to play that way in league 1 and get relegated. Looking at Plymouth , sheff weds and Ipswich last season they all got the ball forward fairly quickly and then played their football in the final third. I’m not saying we’ll go down playing a slow patient game I think we’d finish around mid table because we’ve got a very good side, but I think we wouldn’t be getting the most out of what weve got. Looking at our squad and the strength of league 1 this feels like the best opportunity to win promotion to the championship since probably the last time we did. I just don’t want us to miss out because we played negative football.

Did Shrewsbury purposely narrow their pitch for the game?
Can you change pitch dimensions from game to game?

Agreed ….again ! I didn’t go yesterday but looking at the stats after about 60 mins we’d had 65-70% of the play and 1 shot on target , they’d had 3 . We do definitely need to mix things up a bit more .

It was a game of two halves in terms of our performance, shrews were the same throughout just a typical mid table league 1 side. First half we were like a really embarrassing Barcelona impersonator and in the second half we played like a decent league 1 side.

I’m going to summarise the advice from my terrace:
“Nooo, not back to the keeper”
“Get it in the mixer”
“Kick it FORWARDS”
“Tackle him then!”

We started the 2nd half on Saturday a bit better. Once 1 up we really started to show what we can do. As Shrewsbury were the home side they would be expected to be more risky the longer the game went on. My concern is that if they went 1 up would we have been able to break them down? Looking at the players we have on our books we should be able to play at a higher tempo. It was nice to see us not sit on a 1-0 lead though. Better game management than previously

Just watched the full replay.Dogged defensively and won the game with the sole quality move there was, then killer goal from a short corner at last. When Shrews tried to press us really high in second half (like keeper and centre backs near 6 yard box)it actually helped us as we were forced to go long and started to pick up second balls with some of their players bypassed completely.Taylor dominant in the air and thought Grant, after being thrown in unexpectedly, did well in a non flashy way.Need to dispose of Wigan next week and season will be up and running.
