ITV4 The Big Match revisited 10.30. Rovers v Ipswich 1978 in the FA cup.
Gouldy couldn't have been offside as it was a back pass!
I won't give a spoiler alert, but oh what could have been!

Remember it well , probably wouldn't be played now a days, sliding door moment for us and certainly Ipswich as i think they went on to win the cup v Arsenal?

We'd have won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1979, but for that ref. Robbed. 😎🏴☠️

Not many players managed to stay on their feet. Was it the 5th round and another lower league team played the winners? With Punky, who knows what could have happened.

Well that was a good watch! What about those crowds eh, especially at Orient, talk about health and safety! wall down , no prob, keep calm and carry on!, crowd surges? no problem! our game much better quality despite conditions, that was some Ipswich team we would have beaten if we had var!,

Loved rewatching that game despite the result.
Without doubt my favourite Rovers kit - Bukta, white shorts and quartered back.
Even like the red numbers on the back - much better imo than plain blue as now.

It’s on ITVX for a while, if anyone missed it. What a team we had then….

Just watched it on ITVX wow that brought back memories.
I was 11 years old, perched at the back of the North Enclosure, parka zipped right up. So much anticipation, the thought of seeing us go through to the last 8 of the FA Cup was almost too much for my young mind to bear. Losing the replay was heartbreaking, I was convinced we'd have beaten Millwall away in the quarters to set up as semi final with WBA (at Highbury I think). Ah what could've been if the lino had remembered you couldn't now be offside from a back pass (pretty sure that rule had only just come in). Great memories though.

Back about 85/86 me and my mate decided to go in the away end with millwall at eastville,we had been drinking cider in the old fox and fancied a laugh or death. Anyway cutting a long story short we got chatting, obviously not saying we were rovers. Thankfully ended one all,not before the local police and been given a kicking and it got a bit lively outside as rovers were under the flyover. Anyway six months or so later they had a game at Ashton which was rather eventful and yes me and my mate were in the away end. Crazy but happy days indeed

I was at that game. At uni in London at the time aged 20. Came back especially for the game with a mate who supported Bournemouth. I also remember the "folk group" The Bollards before the game who sang "follow the Rovers" to the tune of Waltzing Mathilda "Follow the Rovers, Follow the Rovers Under the shade of the M32"
Never made it to the Old Grey Whistle Test.

The Ipswich game was the only game my sister has been to, she fancied Paul Mariner......
Her 2nd game is going to be Pompey on Boxing day
