A great team performance and difficult to single out one player when several were contenders for MotM, but no doubt Marquis made a real difference.
Hunt and Thomas look a great combination but how many times in leagues games earlier this season have they broke the back line and looked up, only to see Brown and Collins on the edge of the box and therefore had to play the ball back instead.
He might not have got a touch to the cross which led to Hunt's goal but his presence was enough to create the space for Hunt and wrong foot the keeper.
How many people noticed the effort he put in for the third goal? He chased down the back line from near the West Stand right across to their left back, making him hurry his clearance and give us possession.
Earlier it was his clever run which took the defender out of position that allowed Evans to run at goal before skying his left foot chance and again when Collins had that run in the second half beating 2 or 3 defenders, it was Big John's run off the ball that created the space.
For his goal he won the ball in his own half and held it up, before laying off a simple ball, before making the run to get in the box.
His pressure means defenders don't get full clearances. I think yesterday was the most times in a game where we shot from outside the box, rather than having to collect the ball ten yards further back and having to go sideways.
Held the ball up well, harried the defence and fully deserved his goal.
I am not sure of the stats, but would expect there is a marked difference between Rovers goals scored this season when Marquis was on the pitch, compared to those when he is not.

Totally agree Dave, Big John was my man of the match but followed closely behind by 3 or 4 others.

JM had a great game but it all stemmed from one simple thing... for whatever reason we were playing 5 yards higher up.
This meant that JM had people in the line of attack which in turn meant there was neither need or room for him to pull wide. He kept central.
I think this was a deliberate because you could see that JM wasn't coming over for throw ins.
He's a menace at occupying a defender. And if he stays central he's a good player at this level. We don't need him running the channels, we need him pinning CBs.

I don't think it was a coincidence we were playing 5 yards further, it was due to Marquis.
There were a lot of moans about their goal, but I would fully expect Marquis to make that sort of challenge on the keeper. Let's face it he has done worse.
For Collins goal he was clever enough to come back from an offside position, but had his hands held up so the officials knew he was not "active". I'm not so sure all our players would have displayed that football knowhow.
Good to see him score. More than anyone he makes us tick, as he is the focal point up front.
Got to Grant was also brilliant. So calm on the ball and again showed his intelligence to counter the physical threat of Wyke.

LT for me was MOM. Great work rate on both sides. Combines well with Hunt.
Evans was excellent in MF. Collins and Marquis worked well up top and I thought Vale at LB deserves some praise too.
For me this came down to one critical tactical/formation change and that was only playing with 1 DCM in Finley.
Previous games we’ve played Finley/Woods or Finley/Ward within the MF set up. With just Finley there it opened up space for Bogarde and Evans to do what they do best and for Collins to stay further forward and not have to drop deep to get a look in on possession.

Great to come away from a game having so many potential man of the match contenders. I don’t think any player was less than a 7 or 8 out of 10. Personally I’m loving watching the skill, movement and awareness of Evans and Thomas. Marquis works his socks off and can set the tone of a game with his aggressive pressing - icing on the cake yesterday was his well deserved and well taken goal.

Whilst I am not an advocate of “goal music” I wouldn’t be averse to Lance cuing up “The goalscorer for Rovers is…” followed by the sound bite “Big John, Big John,…Big Bad John”. We could all join in on the Big Bad John part! Seriously though, I’m glad to see he’s getting recognition for the unsung parts of his game and now he’s got 2 in 2 league games hopefully this is the start of a hot streak.

It’s a good choice but please, no goal music. No drum. These are the democratic principles this club were founded on and what you’re suggesting is unconstitutional.

Looking at that stat then there is no need for me to point out the obvious! He was very unlucky not to score earlier on in the season and then he got dropped. Now that he is back in and has a couple of goals, hopefully that'll boost confidence even more.

I said at the start of the season, that, if we play to his strengths, this could be a good year for him. Hopefully I'll be getting a Boom in May!

I've been saying to my mates for a while now what a really good CF he is,and I would prefer him in my team to JCH anyday, works much harder for the team, but saying that we do need cover for him in the squad. UTG !

Players being "rested" this season seems to be working, JM looks better after a rest, Taylor looks better after a brief rest and Finley was back to his best after a bit longer rest.
