Former colleagues and mates involved in a friendly rivalry cup match as Cheltenham play Newport in a match that could have a major impact in our own clubs finances.
A trip to Wemberley would help some way towards paying off the South Stand loans.

Zain has been booked 4 times this season.
Previously.......he had just one booking since September 2019.
That booking was against Mansfield Town when we lost 2-1 on the opening day match in August 2021.

Loved DC and I had a lot of time for Cogs, personally he was not appreciated by own fans enough. Some of his football was hard to watch but what stood out for me was his passion and spirit, his team represented him!
That time Phil Parkinson stuck his face in Garner’s at Sunderland away, I thought then, Phil mate you’d not have even got with 3 yards of Cogs!
I’d love DC to stay up and Cogs make the play offs.

Coughlan's team here was a lot like Wycombe, limited and not pretty, but effective. Id put up with that to get us out of trouble, like GC initially did, but longer term id like to be entertained with decent proper football as it is an entertainment business. I always say regarding Coughlans tenure, you could only really enjoy the game once it had finished. If we got promoted to the Championship with Barton we would have a much better chance of survival playing his way, than Coughlan's, in my opinion.

GC took over a side devoid of confidence and used the best of the resources he had.
Definitely was a good man manager as he managed to get the best out of players like Kilgour by playing to their strengths and getting the team organized.
Just my opinion, but if JB took over from DC, we would have gone down.
If GC took over Tis then we would have had a fighting chance of staying up.
The rumour I heard was that he wanted to spend approx £250k on Liam Scales when he was an unknown (now Scottish Prem and International squad player) and an unknown utility player (Lucas Atkins?)but was not allowed. Their wages would not have been significant.
With investment would he have been able to play more attractive football? Who knows, but like at Newport now, he is very good at getting a team of limited ability to be better than the sum of their parts and fight for their club.

Great post MTFC and I know for a fact as well Cogs begged for his job back on the Sunday and it was too late, he said he made a mistake.
For me, if he had been forgiven, rightly or wrongly, we’d never had experienced Div2 football again. He might not have been here today but we would not have gone down.
I also don’t agree with LastMinuteWinner that his brand of football would not have survived in the Championship. Wycombe went down in the end on the last game of the season playing his style where as Peterborough also come straight back down playing passing football. I was at Portman Road that day when we went third, if we had some how gone up that season, we’d have taken JCH with us into the Championship. Millwall play a direct brand of football now, Warnock never kept Udders up playing champagne football.
GC’s sides were organised and played to a plan and formula, it worked. People talk about the attendances being bad, they were but he started to win fans over, we took over 1,000 that day to Portman Road on a December Saturday, people started to believe something was happening.

Great experience there that day and then suddenly in the post match interview it was all dashed.Recall a comment on this Forum ,'It was so far to travel ,it was nearly in Belgium!'.

A great day with some epic post match celebrations with the squad, quickly dashed on our way back to the train station. Still can’t figure out how Cogs says he spoke to our squad after the game, but a member of the Ipswich squad that day told me their entire group including staff all knew he was leaving before the game had even started. All very bizarre.

Starnes announced that Mansfield had made an approach to the club to speak to Coughlan on the Thursday before the game. Not sure his decision to leave was as big a surprise as it was made out to be.

Out of interest where did you hear about Cogs begging for the job back on Sunday, never heard of that before? Always thought there must've been more to it than met the eye, probably 50% of the 92 are within a doable daily commute from Sheffield so never understood why he didn't wait until the end of the season as if he'd got us into the playoffs (Jesus even a top 10 finish would've been a decent achievement with that squad), surely a better offer than Mansfield would've been on the table.

That rings a bell. Didn't enjoy Cogs' style of football, but he always came across as a decent, straightforward bloke, shame it ended the way it did.

Perhaps he did like one of my former work colleagues did, handed in his notice hoping to get a pay rise after somebody got one doing the same move, but then got an almighty surprise when the boss just accepted his resignation! If GC did have genuine family needs then he was very fortunate that Mansfield offered him a job nearer home.
