I’d give him C+ overall
Highest grade second half of the 2021/22 season I’d give him a A
Lowest grade a D in our relegation season where he seemed to give up and blamed the previous two managers
I would put him on a par with Trolls purely on footballing matters not the off the field stuff

Between Jan 22 and May 22 he was a rockstar manager.
The rest of the time, a bit ordinary and at times less than that.

Promotion run-in was fun.
Off the field antics, public dressdowns of players etc and ultimately football that flattered to deceive.
Borderline C+ but all the off the field stuff means a C in the end for me.

2/10 arrogant fool, in the actuality we are in a similar position to when he arrived, since then he’s been brim full it and our association with him has done nothing but drag our good name through the dirt…great to see the back of him and if we replaced him with a bag of cement we’d probably see an immediate improvement.

Other than the second half of his first full season I was mostly bored to death watching league 1 /2 players try to play tika taka and fail quite embarrassingly.
That run from around Christmas right up until the 7-0 was brilliant don’t get me wrong it was fast direct in your face football with pace , width and determination and there were moments since that season but unfortunately not enough but I think Barton had higher senses of grandeur than his players were capable of , should have pulled his neck in a bit and if he had done would still be in a job with us.

Somewhere inside him there's a football genius that's continually hampered by all of his human weaknesses (no need to list them, we all know what they are). Clearly he knows what he's doing running a League One club but yet can't quite nail down all the different parts of the job all at the same time...
...bit like the clever kid at school who knows the subjects inside out all year long but is rubbish under the pressure of the final exams - when they get their grade it's a C but everyone knows it should be higher...

My biggest beef with JB was the capitulation in seemingly accepting relegation, and then demanding the relegation not appearing on his CV. Coughlan would NEVER have approached the situation like that. As for our promotion, let's face it EA single handidly got us over the line, without him we'd still be in Div 2 now.
Taking into account the resources and backing, I have to go:
Barton C+
Tisdale D-
Garner C-
Coughlan B+

He also got us relegated dont forget. When did Coughlan get us relegated? Coughlan SAVED us from 2 relegations. The season he took over from DC, and the following season from points accrued until he was replaced by BG. |
