We often hear about how there’s no respect for officials in the game. I remember this differently.
Watching in the 90s, there were for a start some really nasty tackles and the game was generally more violent.
However, I recall a common occurrence which doesn’t happen as much now: The mobbing of the ref.
Back then, often you’d get a kind of melee round the ref. A mass of bodies pushing and shoving each other. Not sure if others remember this.
If anything I think the game is generally better behaved now. Other than players celebrating at fans . That’s fairly new. You’d get it then but only where there was a grudge. A lot of players now make a bee line for opposition fans purely for the edgy kudos.

We don't have enough Refs in the Devon and Exeter league so clubs in divisions 6,7 and 8 are often asked to provide someone who understands the rules to officiate. Not so many take it up now due to abuse at lower league levels.Best I ever saw was At Nuneaton when we won 2.0 I think it was.He was outstanding.Wonder what happen to him? Monkhouse was good that day.

Maybe they are being encouraged to do this to incite possible fines and even points deductions for opposing clubs by goading their fans...

There was a directive not to mob the ref after the Arsenal v Man Utd game I think yrs back .

Yes it may be better behaved now in that you don’t have knobs like Keane spitting and hollering at the referees but I’m not sure that the referees don’t get mobbed. Having watched plenty of PL football over the past decade we still get the melee around the referee but they are usually waving the hands with imaginary cards in them after any foul from a player on a yellow. In League 1 the matches I’ve seen individual or a couple of players will protest against refs but as you say, no large melees. But we still get the masses of bodies pushing and shoving each other in the matches I’ve seen. Not the ref though! I think the players’ behaviour is different now. Probably not so vicious in the way that Man U, Chelsea and other top clubs used to turn on the referees. Now it’s more planned, more tactical and they are very aware how to target referees and players. And, of course, how to get players sent off, booked and how to pick up and deliver easy fouls. Less vicious but more tactical and planned interventions. UTG!

Don’t forget the desert…..Jam rolly Polly and Custard washed down with a couple of pints of Stout. Having said that, obesity and chronic cardiovascular diseases weren’t so prevalent back in the day. We need to skip a few takeaways peeps and get down more fresh fruit and whole grains.

My manifesto for this would be:
1) When a player argues with a ref, move the ball 10 yards. This needs to be done 100% of the time.
The forth ref to report the ref if this doesn't happen.
2) Any player that does the card sign should get a yellow and removed from the pitch for 10 minutes.
The forth ref to report the ref if this doesn't happen.
3) Any player that celebrates in front of the opposition should get a yellow and be removed from the pitch for 10 minutes.
The forth ref to report the ref if this doesn't happen.
Any red card offences to be yellows and be removed from the pitch for 10 minutes and then reviewed by the forth ref to upgrade to a red.
All yellow cards involve a 10 minute removal from the pitch.
I see the issue in football refereeing is this concept of having 'Common sense'. No, we should remove this subjectivity. It needs to be consistent. It will take less than half a season of strong implementation to teach the players that their behaviour have to change.
We also have an issue where people say "We didn't come here to see you ref". If a ref has lots of decisions to be made, it is the players fault, not the refs.
Then finally, this one is just to provoke!
Any fan who who is disagreeing with the referee is made to referee a Sunday league game the next day (for a Saturday match) and the next Sunday for a midweek game.
*ducks*

Local footy have a ten minute sin bin for dissent.Gets complicated if a player has already been booked and when down to ten men ,teams simply pack their defence.

What do you mean by 'Patch their defence"? Pack soz. I suppose the question I have is "So what?". We have played teams that pack the defence from the 1st minute, they have a fancy name for it these days. Low block or park the bus. Teams do it with 11 players and do it when a player is red carded. It should still be an advantage to the team with an extra player.
