The modern way of playing out from the back retaining possession means that oppo central defenders spend less time actually defending. Brentford have been successful by mixing-up the way they play by having Ivan Toney flicking on for 2 running in behind - and so the game opens-up putting oppo defenders under more pressure more often. I think we have the players to play that way.

Good post mate you could be on to something there, I guess JB AC or LT would be the main targets only issue being thus far nobody seems remotely on the wave length to read those flick ons!

We've got Martin who does the flick-ons but we need to be having 2 players making the forward runs in behind. We've often had none. We've got lots of options as to who those 2 players could be.

I'd have no confidence whatsoever in our forward players finishing those one on ones after the flick ons. Maybe Luke Thomas if I had to put my house on one of them. Chris Martin is the only composed finisher in our squad but he'd have to win the flick ons cus the others don't win headers either 😂

Everyone used to lump it from the keeper's goal kick to the half way line where 20 players would condense into a small percentage of the pitch and hope they win the ball in the air.
Pep has changed everything.
The change to goal kicks and passing to a team mate inside the penalty area has made a big difference with other methods to play out becoming possible
Teams are even doing it in grassroots

Fair point. However if we have 2 players getting in behind from Martin flick-ons then those 2 also have the option to then cut-back to Martin and the other player - so they receive the ball from in front of them - so easier to score.

There was nothing more beautiful than a whoosh up to Devon White, elbows all over the shop, and Penrice racing on to it to smash it home.

UTG Percy would stay wide forwards on the left-wing so streching the oppo whilst Vaughan Jones focused on defending at left-back. Whereas on the right Mehew would cut inside from wide areas so Ian Alexander would cross from deep areas at right-back. Ollie the passionate terrier in the middle closing down the oppo. Reece who kept things simple, low risk. Each player had a clear role to play being very effective at something in particular rather than master of none.

Before the Cheltenham game we were 6th highest for most possession per 90 in League One, 7th best for big chances created, 10th worst for big chances missed, 14th best expected goals and 19th for expected goals conceded.
If we had a finisher we would have arguably beaten Pompey, Barnsley, Lincoln, Oxford, Reading and Orient and been sitting in the playoffs. But if my aunt had balls she would be my uncle.
