Official statistics reveal fewer people are seeking to come from abroad to work in the NHS or in social care. The statistics reveal that the outgoing Conservative government granted some 286,382 work visas overall in the year to June 2024 - 11% down on the previous year. Detailed Home Office data shows that it approved 89,085 visas for the health and care sector in the year to June 2024 - more than 80% down on April to June of the year before. The decline in workers wanting to come to the UK comes after the former Conservative government introduced restrictions on foreign workers and their families in an effort to slash overall immigration. www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cn7l272pz0zo

Surely that won't be a problem?

Starmer laying the ground for tax rises and cuts in the Budget.
He will need to start showing some progress soon though, if he wants to carry the people with him.

Caught a bit of French news today while on if I've heard it correctly the Olympic truce has cracked and Macron is finding it difficult to get things agreed.
@france, is that how things are?

Starmer laying the ground for tax rises and cuts in the Budget. He will need to start showing some progress soon though, if he wants to carry the people with him. The first hundred days in office are traditionally the most productive - the time where you start your big changes and make your mark on the country. ...didn't see the £22 billion black hole in finances but still spent £10bn+ on union pay demands with no efficiency measures in return... ...prioritised some (by no means all) court cases to get positive headlines, actually slowing down the overall process for other offenders... ...had a "...fully costed plan to freeze energy bills..." published in 2022. The energy cap has been raised 10% last week... ..riots...record high small boat crossings....VIP flights....unions queuing up to take industrial action for more pay.... ...quite a lot of jobs/passes going to donors/politically allies/party or trade union members and it's not clear if any were properly advertised, let alone other people considered for these high paying important roles... I know he's outlasted Truss in terms of days. Might well put a bet on him not lasting two years as PM...

£10bn? Do you have a breakdown on that? That's the figure quoted in a few papers I've seen £1.7bn for the junior doctors and £100m for ASLEF. Wondering if I've missed anything. Starmer's cancelled the helicopter contract, saving a little bit.

I know he's outlasted Truss in terms of days. Might well put a bet on him not lasting two years as PM... £10bn? Do you have a breakdown on that? I can probably find one if I look hard enough, as Trevorgas mentioned it's the figure from a number of sources, potentially over a 5-year term...? I did find this - Economists estimate that each 1 percentage point rise in the public sector pay bill would cost about £2.5bn to taxpayers. - "...to restore public sector pay to the same level as 2011 in real terms would theoretically require an increase of 21 per cent — or more than £50bn..." On that basis the £10bn figure is not an unreasonable estimate - but I guess these must be numbers for a whole parliamentary term - if it's yearly then with no associated efficiencies we really are screwed.....

Thanks, that's for all public sector areas with recommendations from the relevant pay review bodies, including teachers, other NHS workers and the armed forces. Something most governments would accept, regardless of party colour. We were looking at different assumptions, makes sense.

Something most governments would accept, regardless of party colour. We were looking at different assumptions, makes sense. ...and to be fair the financial costs will be owned by Reeves/Starmer and their ministers who have made these decisions (plus of course the taxpayer and whoever forms the next government....) The real problem is the overall cost - for some of these disputes we've already had strikes - that's a cost to all sides (but a cost caused by only one side). To agree the pay deals with no compromises to increase efficiency is just a green light to all the other unions to ask for more than they would have previously expected to get... Did teachers want 6% earlier this year (hypothetical situation to explain the point)? Now they will probably ask for 12% and get 8% with no increases in efficiency. As will other groups this year and next year and the year after. Some of those who have just settled with the new government are already talking about calling for another new deal as early as next year.

Going to get a lot of stick for this but as a smoker who enjoys his tobacco with a pint I shall be really upset if they ban smoking in beer gardens.
Happy to not smoke inside, restaurants, cinemas, planes, trains, etc as I was never a fan of that, and even though no ban at the moment I'm always respectful of others outside enjoying the fresh air and move far away. But to ban it outside in a beer garden? And possibly in a designated smoking area at the Mem? Hmmm.
