One of the more principled MPs.
"Conservative MP Chris Skidmore says he will stand down as an MP next week in protest at plans to issue more oil and gas licences.
The former minister said he was resigning as a Tory MP ahead of a vote on a bill on Monday that would guarantee annual licensing rounds.
The move will trigger a by-election in his Kingswood seat in Gloucestershire."

He earned £80k last year as an advisor to a green energy company (not bad for 'just' 4 hrs/week...) - imagine what they'll pay him for 40hrs/week when he's not an MP any more!

But do you agree with his actions in standing down on a point of principle ( even though he probably realises the games over anyway)? Im guessing here you’re not one of those climate change denying loons Super ? 🤔

I can understand media appearances or writing in the press. But for a year now he's been paid to be a lobbyist whilst inside Parliament/government. The only reason he's resigning now and not at the General Election as previously announced is he can't enforce (let alone keep) the party whip on this vote whilst working for the company he also works for. Stuart said he was "...one of the more principled MPs...", I added some important context none of the local media seems to be covering...

Im guessing here you’re not one of those climate change denying loons Super ? 🤔 Has he really stood down on a point of principle? In November he said he would not seek re-election at the next General election, he knows deep down the tories will lose the election and thirdly his Kingswood constituency seat is due to be abolished at the next GE anyway. If he had principles he would carry on serving the people of his constituency that he was elected to do. Let's face it there would be dozens of MPs resigning due to principles if that were the case. Maybe there's something in what supergas says about earning potential elsewhere.

I alluded to that in my previous post , as we all know …..all Tories are self serving shysters 😂 To be fair to him I think he must find Sunak’s choice to open up yet more oil fields a stupid thing to do and he is making a stand of sorts…..although caveated by the fact he knows the writing is on the wall anyway. Just find it amusing that Super jumps in with his dig at him but I’ve not noticed him calling out the multiple Tory MP’s in hock to the oil industry and in their pay.

Not sure if you've noticed but the UK's energy security equation changed dramatically when Russia invaded Ukraine. So regardless of any net-zero commitment which is still twenty-six years away, if you want the lights on at home under the next Labour government surely we should be keeping our options open?

It would help if we weren’t so reliant on foreign energy . Investing in wind & solar here is the way to go , not into new oil fields that won’t lower our bills as it’ll be sold to the highest bidder on the international market. Storage or lack of was also a big factor in price surges …. Who cut those down ?

Investing in wind is fine but when you consider Europe's biggest off shore wind farm is being built at Dogger Bank which will when fully operational in 2026 will produce a whole 5% of UKs electricity needs !

Im guessing here you’re not one of those climate change denying loons Super ? 🤔 Probably not a point of principle. He’s almost certainly going to into a role in green tech/energy with that story, which is far higher paid than political work. Indeed, it’s the money after politics which is interesting. Nobody would ever be an MP for the package they get, it’s peanuts in comparison. Not exploiting your own reserves when we all know full well that most the worlds oil exists in countries inhabited by either mafia, the bonkers religious, politically unstable or all three? It will have virtually zero impact. The solution is for green innovation to make it easier than oil. It is virtually impossible to impact global carbon emissions without it, and it will take a LOT of oil to make that transition. Drilling itself has no impact on what oil we use. If by the time it’s drilled green technology is preferable, it will be a waste of money. If some mug wants to invest it makes no difference whatsoever to the outcome. Saudi Arabia et al have ridiculous reserves and we will just import it like we have for most of our oil use. Gestures like this are just acts of national self harm. Until the world changes and perhaps forever, we will need some kind of oil production. It’s these kind of “activist” stuff which turns off people. We all know the UK stopping drilling unilaterally will make no difference. The UK becoming carbon neutral won’t either. Go to Asia, and Africa etc and tell me how this works worldwide.

The first duty of any government is national defence which covers things like energy and food security. Not planning in such an unstable world is a dereliction of duty.
