Stood next to me in the North stand by the tunnel sometimes when he became manager. Don't think he always liked the idea of just sitting on the bench open to all the elements.that wire mesh tunnel sure made the opposition sprint through it.

Good point re Aaron Lescott. V underrated.
I might have dreamt this, but he had a fantastic game away to Brentford where we won 3-0, he may have “assisted “ in some or all of them, and the following chant was heard, to the tune of winter wonderland:
There’s only one Aaron Lescott There’s only one Aaron Lescott He used to be sh1te But now he’s alright Walking in a Lescott wonderland.
Happy days.
I have his signed pink shirt, from that charity match, somewhere at home. I may have to dig it out and wear it.

I like the underrated XI idea. If we’re presuming we keep Williams in there, I’ll put in a suggestion for a second name on that team sheet in Aaron Lescott. Six years and over 200 appearances for us and is very rarely mentioned whatsoever. Always gave his all and brought a bit of bite to the team. Would like to hear someone suggest name 3 on the team sheet, perhaps from another era? Oooh I like this idea. I’m proposing Boris, David Mehew. Leading goalscorer in 89/90, and came up with some important goals that season (winner at Cardiff, goal that took us to Wembley for the first time, for example). On paper down as the right winger in a 4-4-2 but actually played the role currently occupied by Aaron Collins. But a much better finisher. Putting a shout in for Disley as well. For me; Brian Parkin, Dave Pritchard, Aaron Lescott, Billy Clark, Mark McChrystal, Ollie Clarke, Craig Disley, Sammy Igoe, Cristian Montaño, John Taylor, Junior Agogo.

Johnny Taylor so rarely gets a mention, 44 goals in 95 league games is outrageous. Richard Walker is also worth a mention, top scorer in the 2006/07 promotion season with 22 goals in all competitions including 2 in the Playoff Final.

Favourite player and manager. Used to make playing football effortless on those atrocious pitches at the time. Gutted when he left. Loved him - one of my favourite players. How many times did he split an opposing defence wide open and put Paul Randall clear to go one on one with the keeper - inevitably scoring. Another memory is a 35 yard shot to score away at Sunderland c 1975/76 to silence Roker Park - greeted with silence ( including me!).

A product of a generally unglamorous era in the clubs history frustratingly, like wsmjohn said it was a time of real decline at the club off the pitch and declining attendances. I'd be interested to see everyone's thoughts on an Underrated XI, especially as Williams was a bit before my time. David Williams is always in my best 11 players of all time . Nobody could ping a cross field pass like he could .

So many to choose from but fwiw: Eadie Trevor Jacobs Mark Mc Chrystal Steve Elliot Aaron Lescott. Stuart Campbell Frankie Prince Tom Stanton David Williams Richard Walker Ellis Harrison
Missed out the players I didn’t see too much of, all the ones I choose I saw a lot of. I think Ellis only one who we sold for a fee but always felt he was underrated by fans and by the club so I put him in.
UTG!

David Williams was a product of the South Wales nursery team which we had. It was a conveyor belt of talent including Wayne Jones, Neil Slatter, Bryn Jones and others who I cant remember. What happened to the nursery club ?

What happened to the nursery club ? Not sure Bryn came through the nursery, may have been spotted by Stan Montgomery who ran the nursery. Peter Aitkin came via the nursery.

Since watching Rovers from the mid seventies, I would say David Williams is one of the best if not the best midfielder I have seen in a Rovers shirt. He was one of the most skilful players we have had in that time. Could put an accurate pass anywhere across the pitch, I can remember him lobbing the ball over the defence to Randell , then it was in the back of the net. Could also score some great goals from distance. I would say him and Gary Mabbutt , two of the most talented plyers we have produced. Also went on to manage Wales, not sure that any other of our players has gone on to manage a national side since then.

If we had a free kick, he would take it and score 9 times out of 10

Yes I was joking. You should never interrupt “mature” Gasheads when they’re talking about David Williams. He’s both a sporting and biblical figure round these parts. St Williams of Eastville.

Best Gas midfielder I saw until the arrival of Elliot Anderson. Brilliant player and a clever bloke.

How did Williams compare to the likes of Craig Stanley, Matt Gill, Dom Blizzard, Zain Westbrook etc? You've left off Justin Skinner and Steve Cross.
