Yes I was joking. You should never interrupt “mature” Gasheads when they’re talking about David Williams. He’s both a sporting and biblical figure round these parts. St Williams of Eastville. Dewi sant. 😃

David Williams - a very special player - up amongst the best ever to play for Bristol Rovers.

Well Chris Sutton appears to be a fan of DW! (If you have the patience to scroll through to the Championship v League 1 section). www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/67857047…as you probably won’t, here’s what he has to say: “I am going to refer to the Canaries v Bristol Rovers as the 'Dave Williams derby' after the former Norwich player and assistant manager who came to Carrow Road from Rovers in the 1980s and had a major influence on my career when I was a youngster. It's a nice connection for this tie but Norwich have to win it. They probably will, and by a deflected goal, but it has all been a bit underwhelming by them this season”.

How did Williams compare to the likes of Craig Stanley, Matt Gill, Dom Blizzard, Zain Westbrook etc? You've left off Justin Skinner and Steve Cross. Skinner was alright

Actually I agree. Unfairly lambasted by some. On occasion he did stop running around like a headless chicken, look up and look for a pass. To many fans this is simply an impediment to “kicking it FORWARD” and “getting it in the mixer”. Although ironically I believe that this is exactly what we need at present and the most positive change the new manager has made.

Wayne Jones for me alongside David Williams. Loved Brian Godfrey as welll - great swap for Graydon and lifted the Watney cup

On the nicknames thread, I almost forgot Paul Nixon from the 89/90 squad. He was a good player in an excellent team, so often gets forgotten.
Scored some great goals in the short time he was here. There were rumours he had a big, big bust up with Gerry, like Geoff 20man, so they both must have been pretty good to get back into favour.
As for Williams true quality. We had a brilliant side, but if we just had one or two better squad players circa 83-85 to cover for injury or loss of form, or if the play offs were introduced a few years earlier, how different would things be?

I was young, so forgive me...
Rovers v Gillingham early 80s. Night match, I think. Very windy....but towards the open end.
DW always had a screamer Bobby Charlton of a shot, so he let's fly from the half way line. 1-0 Rovers (as we weren't the Gas then) Little or no celebration, just a nonchalant trot back to starting position.
I presume that's the character of the man. Unassuming, hard working, efficient effective and warm.
Yep, he suits us perfectly. I too was gutted when he left, but he was always destined for better things.

Since watching Rovers from the mid seventies, I would say David Williams is one of the best if not the best midfielder I have seen in a Rovers shirt. He was one of the most skilful players we have had in that time. Could put an accurate pass anywhere across the pitch, I can remember him lobbing the ball over the defence to Randell , then it was in the back of the net. Could also score some great goals from distance. I would say him and Gary Mabbutt , two of the most talented plyers we have produced. Also went on to manage Wales, not sure that any other of our players has gone on to manage a national side since then. Bobby Gould. Didnt DW go to Man utd as a coach for some years from Norwich.

His Wikipedia entry covers his coaching career as follows: Management and coaching
In July 1992 Williams was appointed assistant manager at AFC Bournemouth. In February 1994 he took on the same position at Everton before becoming reserve team coach at Leeds United. After completing a youth team coaching role at Manchester United in 2002, he spent some time as a driving instructor in Harrogate, returning to Norwich to as Assistant Academy Manager in the summer of 2004.
In addition to his role at Carrow Road, he also coached the Welsh international youth sides as assistant to Brian Flynn. In May 2007 at the age of 52 Williams left Norwich and retired from club coaching though continued his involvement with the Welsh youth squads. He briefly became assistant manager of the Welsh team when Flynn was appointed caretaker in September 2010.
In February 2013, soon after Flynn had been made manager of Doncaster Rovers, he appointed Williams as his assistant. Williams left the role at the end of the 2012/13 season.

Wonder if he would consider a role (full or part time) at Rovers academy ?

Wonder if he would consider a role (full or part time) at Rovers academy ? He has got to be late 60s now and retired up north. It's almost 40 years since he was connected to the Rovers, so very unlikely he would come back.

David. was a very good player for Rovers and an excellent striker of the ball from long range. I remember during the 1970’s when Rovers beat Sunderland 1-0 at Eastville, and David scored a magnificent long range goal!! Among the best goals I have seen.
