Our current team captain has flummoxed, flabbergasted and fooled a few supporters and opposing players this season.
On a number of occasions this season certain forum users have expressed firm opinions and queried the value and contribution of Sam Finley.
Recently the mood music has altered significantly and his performances have been appreciated more frequently.
Apart from his overall play and teamwork his disciplinary record has been seen as a weakness and a serious problem.
He was regarded as a slight hothead and ultra competitive during his earlier days with Fylde.
Between 2015 and 2018 he played 47 times for Fylde and was booked in 18 games.
He also managed to acquire a total of 7 Red Cards.
How do supporters believe his record for Accrington Stanley, Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers compare with his Fylde experience?
"The usual Yellow", " probably get sent off now", " needs more self control".
Keen listeners at matches will have heard similar comments to this from other supporters during games.
His record over the last few seasons is, in fact, quite typical of competitive League One midfielders.
There are many competitive midfield players at other clubs with a worse disciplinary record than Sam Finley.
His record for the last six seasons in the EFL might surprise some supporters.
2023/24 Season - Played * 28. Yellows * 7. Reds * 0.
2022/23 Season - Played * 43. Yellows * 10. Reds * 0.
2021/22 Season - Played * 40. Yellows * 14. Reds * 1.
2020/21 Season - Played * 31. Yellows * 5. Reds * 0.
2019/20 Season - Played * 38. Yellows * 12. Reds * 0.
2018/19 Season - Played * 44. Yellows * 8. Reds * 0.
This record with three separate league clubs over six seasons suggest that Sam Finley may have been somewhat misjudged by some supporters.

Well it’s not the most interesting forum post I’ve ever read but props for giving it a go. Might not be but it definitely surprised me. Blimey, I’ve always thought he was on the edge of a red card on many occasions. So he must have been / is a very clever player to have just stayed the right side of not getting a red. Well done him. UTG!

At the start of the season I was all up for moving him on. Under Barton he looked jaded, overloaded and in real time during games he went missing, and had no real partnership with his team mates.
Under Taylor he looks rejuvenated and with a fit Grant Ward beside him they are forming a great partnership. We all see the problems with Woods came into the team the other day. Finley became ineffective.
His interview the other day showed he's actually taking on the responsibiliy of driving us forward.
Fair play to him.

Also, he will have iffy spells under Taylor. Hes a 7/10 guy who makes mistakes like all midfielder players but when we win, they get forgotten about more than if we lose. If we lose a few games soon, Finley will be a candidate for scapegoat again don't worry.

I’ve always thought we tend to play well as a team if Finley plays well but the problem is that his good performances were becoming increasingly sporadic.
Since Taylor has come in he has been a lot more consistent in stringing a number of good performances together. I think this is probably down to more structure in our play in general than under Barton, a change in formation and Grant Ward being amazing.

This The transformation of the TEAM under Taylor has been revealing. And, the manager's first choice coaching staff are not fully in place yet. Finley has genuinely surprised me. He appears to be flourishing under the new manager, as do the whole team. Go for it Finley. Now we can move on from the Great Pretender, at last. Feels really good.

He’s got football intelligence and the lack of red cards back that up. He’s probably been due far more but has been able to manipulate situations. He’s a good league one footballer.

isnt he a boyhood Liverpool fan? im expecting him to go on fire now until we play them, its probably a dream of his to play at Anfield scoring in front the Kop (obviously Norwich is a foregone conclusion) every so often i get a tweet suddenly appearing on my timeline of Sam Finley standing in the Kop watching a game with his son. its obviously not when Rovers are playing but you can tell that he is a Liverpool fan. The thought of walking out and playing at Anfield must be on his bucket list and lets hope that he gets to achieve it. Firstly the club has to beat Norwich and then he has to make sure that he is not suspended or injured. Does anyone know how many points he has or where he is in terms of potential suspensions ?
