YESTERDAY
How did the atrocious weather conditions on Tuesday February 6th 2024 impact the overall attendances for the midweek matches in League One last night?
As expected.
Just the 4 games completed.
BRISTOL ROVERS 0 * 2 FLEETWOOD TOWN
Attendance was 7,385.
Average Home crowd this season is 8,117.
EXETER CITY 2 * 1 PETERBOROUGH UNITED
Attendance was 5,277.
Average Home crowd this season is 6,664.
PORT VALE 0 * 1 LEYTON ORIENT
Attendance was 4,117.
Average Home crowd this season is 7,053.
STEVENAGE 0 * 1 READING
Attendance was 3,947.
Average Home crowd this season is 4,765.
Apart from The Grecians who luckily won with two late own goals against the run of play the Home clubs probably wished their matches were postponed like Burton Albion's or abandoned like Cambridge United's game against Bolton Wanderers.
Are midweek Winter matches at Home a great point-earner or a real money-spinner? NO.

Burton's match was off but they only get tiny crowds. Will their 'Rest' help or hinder them on Sat? Won't be coming up as I sensed our season hit the Buffers last night.

So of the four games we had the smallest percentage drop at 9%, everyone else was a double-digit percentage drop, Port Vale the worst with -41%. Bad for us, worse for everyone else... ...plus even with the weather, it would have allowed some fans who we know can't attend at 3pm on a Saturday to go - so again, other than the weather, performance and result, not a complete write-off....

With so many games now called off to Internationals it seems Tuesdays are back to being the norm anyway, even though the EFL indicated previously they wanted to reduce them.
The big unknown is how many home fans now just sit at home and watch Tuesday's games on iFollow?

NO. - Fleetwood to Bristol 208 miles. - Peterborough to Exeter 240 miles. - Leyton to Burslem 178 miles. - Reading to Stevenage 67 miles. The only one there that's remotely easy to do for away fans is Reading travelling to Stevenage. Also according to this article in League One Fleetwood have the worst travelling numbers, Posh 15th and Orient 11th.

The amount of cancelled games and then rearranged midweek due to international call ups to kids football at this level must have a big impact on crowd figures as well.

The big unknown is how many home fans now just sit at home and watch Tuesday's games on iFollow? Never going to happen with all the loan players that are in the EFL now. Clubs are now calling off their games for international calls ups that they could only ever dream of doing a few years back. When L2 clubs are doing this you know its a joke. One option is to reduced loan numbers but this will hinder the big clubs stock-piling players which of course they wont let happen, or just not count loan players in the 3 needed to call it off?

It'll be interesting to see what happens next season if the Rovers v Reading fixture is chosen by Sky on an intentional weekend, will they play the game regardless of call ups in order to pick up the TV money, or still call it off and then leave Sky with a blank slot, or even slots, to fill?

That's the thing, its down to the 2 clubs at the end of the day. Those moaning about playing Sat-Tues-Sat for weeks were quite happy calling off their Saturday games because their reserves were getting called up by Kazakhstan and the like. Hopefully Reading will be in L2 anyway. Just dont let clubs include loanees in the 3 internationals and a lot more games will be played, and who knows maybe clubs wont rely as much on borrowing and developing other teams players.
