efl.com/news/2024/february/09/see-the-january-sky-bet-league-one-manager---player-of-the-month-winners/Bristol Rovers striker Chris Martin has been named the Sky Bet League One Player of the Month for January. The 35-year-old Martin demonstrated all of his assured experience from an 11-club career. His five goals in four games included a delightful glancing header at Barnsley, an impudent flick against Blackpool and a superbly timed finish against Oxford. Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “Chris Martin showed all his experience and ability to score five goals across Bristol Rovers’ four games in January. “Rovers ended the month on a high with a 3-1 win over Oxford United, Martin got the ball rolling on a terrific performance with a superbly timed finish.” Sky Bet EFL trader Ivor Davies said: “It was a month of penalty box finishing of the highest order during January for one of the Football League’s best ever marksmen – Chris Martin. “At 20/1 Martin has an outside chance to finish as League One top scorer. It’s still pretty congested at the top but he’s only six behind Devante Cole on 17.”

He's got the best goals per 90 mins ratio, best minutes per goal, the best goal conversion %, the best shot accuracy %, while also having the least shots out of all the top 10 scorers in League 1.
He has been top class, you cannot argue with that.

Here’s a question for those who’ve played the game to a better standard than me.
Some players have the art of right place right time.
Is this innate or can it be taught?
I’m in sales and there’s a complete lie basically that you either have it or you don’t. Sales can be taught. Very few are a natural.
I wonder if what we see as “he’s got the knack” Ala R Walker is actually something they’ve worked very hard on but it’s subtle. I’m Sure you can learn positioning.

Having been fortunate and been able to play at a decent enough level in the past & coached by various managers.
Its pretty much something that you are born with that natural instinct to be in the right place at the right time and to have the composure to put the ball in the back of the net when under pressure.
Managers & coaches can help but it comes naturally to some.

Managers & coaches can help but it comes naturally to some. The calmness under pressure is something that is hard to coach and probably applies to all sport. My main sport is golf and you see high quality players who can pull off all sorts of shots in practice and hole putts left right and centre but a crucial putt to win a match or win a tournament totally changes the dynamic. A one on one in football when you are clean through is tough for most players, not many like Harry Kane or Michael Owen that you could have total confidence in when the pressure is really on. From my experience you can learn to be a better goal scorer in terms of positional awareness and that can be from learning from your own experiences or coaching. Alan Russell is a very good specialist striker coach. Others like Gary Lineker had that natural calmness but he also had a modus operandi - when a ball was wide he always made a run across the defender to the near post every single time.

Interesting comments thanks guys.
You can see this when they pick players for penalties. It’s not always the players you think. Who thought Balanta would take was it our second? I’m guessing DC knew him and knew he had the composure to take one.
I would imagine experience helps. In several sports and activities the first time you have pressure your hands shake but by the 100th time it’s routine. I used to have terrible nerves speaking to groups but now it’s second nature.
