With all the talk of monies from the Prem filtering into the lower league clubs, would we not do something to help out lower non league clubs in the SW region?
Both Taunton and Torquay (amongst many others) have dire financial problems.
No doubt we will spend shedloads on a warm climate overseas pre season training camp (when it is over 20 degrees in this country anyway!).
Would it not be cheaper for a pre season SW tour where we can play games to help some of local (-ish) teams?
Plus a chance first hand to check out some local talent.
Easier for the fans, cheaper for the club and better for the carbon footprint.

Equally feel we should always have one local fixture a year that we send our first team to during pre season. It used to be brilliant for non league sides like Mangotsfield.

We should arrange our u21 side to play friendlies against local clubs throughout the season.

Yes, a lot of ‘local’ non-league clubs are having financial problems at the moment. Taunton have suffered with developing some good players who then switch from a semi-pro club to a professional set up with Yeovil which together with their pitch problems have made worse their situation. But no one there doing anything wrong. A case, I think, of growing too big too soon perhaps. The step up from the Southern League to the National League South is a large step. Torquay, a different case. Their owner Clarke Osborne has a chequered history of club ownership. I don’t know all the in and outs but Torquay fans certainly don’t support him.
Anything our owners do to improve BRFC as a club has my support but I wouldn’t want to compromise that by making decisions that are based on what is best for local clubs. Sounds a bit mean but whilst I’d be glad to see us play local teams in pre-season, like we currently do with Melksham and Bath and others if it’s useful to our club, I don’t want to line the pockets of people like the Torquay owner. But a pre-season friendly at Torquay sounds quite attractive as part of a whole pre-season.
UTG!

I really miss our annual pre season friendly with Torquay. You could get the train and hav some bevvies and enjoy the town. I rmemwber watching a 17 year old Muzzy Carayol turn out for Torquay one time. He ran rings around us. It would be nice to visit some other local non league teams which have rail access. Have we ever played Truro? How about Hereford? Be nice to se some variety and play some games where you can get the train!

Not sure it's reasonable to expect the club to plan their pre season around helping out local non league clubs. Surely it's more about how they can team build etc at the lowest cost.
We have played pre season friendlies at Melksham recently, which seems a bit random (even if they have decent facilities) as we don't really have any connections with them.

Preseason should be all about what helps us prepare for the season ahead - if that includes playing a local non league side then fine but we shouldn’t go out of our way to do anyone else favours. Any visits to non league grounds should be carefully planned for those with decent pitches - last thing we want is players rolling ankles or twisting a knee.

Bearing in mind that Rovers ourselves are in debt and likely to report record losses in the next accounts.it seems a little silly to expect the club to help out others who in reality owe less than we do. Having said that there is nothing to stop Gashead doing what the guys from Plymouth did and going to watch one of the local sides when Argyle were playing a fair distance away

Having said that there is nothing to stop Gashead doing what the guys from Plymouth did and going to watch one of the local sides when Argyle were playing a fair distance away I cant imagine many league clubs make any decent money during pre season. Unless you get really lucky and get to play a top premier league team but nowadays they all play around the world for commercial reasons making as much money as possible. I do agree with the OP though about spending money to train in Europe just to then play another league team. Maybe good for team bonding but at a huge cost. Unless the owners have some crazy idea of flaunting us commercially in Kuwait and want us to play there when its 50 degrees!

If the owners really want to cut costs then looking at the cost of our foreign pre-season tours could be a good place to start?

This will almost certainly get cut Hasnt helped us start the seasons well have they?! It's one of the weirdest stats about Rovers in recent years. The last time we won the opening game of the season was 2011. Since our Conference season (and despite the different managers, backroom staff, players, opponents etc etc) it takes us on average six games to get our second win on the board. In my opinion one of the most important things Taylor can do is figure out how to get us off to a good start next season - everything (attendances, cup runs, recruitment, even shirt sales) benefits from a winning start in August...

May be my mind playing tricks on me but one pre season at mango they kicked the living daylights out of us and we’ve not been back since. Obviously it’s now a team of kids / SGS but doubt they’ll be on the tour.

You don't want your side to play non league sides too many times as in the build up to the season the idea scenario is to increase the standard of the opposition to at least the level you are playing. A friendly against Torquay would always be good due to its location but I agree with whoever said that for local sides it gives them a good chance to kick a professional footballer. The pre season should be for the Manager to decide what is best for his build up but the most important thing for a good start is to have recruitment pretty well completed by the first friendly.

Mix and match for me, like the idea of playing against say Torquay United; also recognise BRFC needs to prepare for a tough season in Div 1, week abroad climatise meet the new players team bonding, etc. ..., then back to the MEM for a game v Swansea or equivalent.

Yes it is but I’m not sure what was in my post to make you think I wasn’t saying this. 🤔 If the implication is that games against ‘local teams’ may not be competitive then another reason for pre-season games has to be the need to get fit after the summer lay off, play football against teams who may not be that competitive in the first few games before getting more competitive as pre-season progresses. That seems to be what we’ve done over the past few years, a few non league games followed by harder games just before we start seriously. UTG!

Thought the mix last season was excellent.
Starting at Melksham and progressing to Brentford B, Chesterfield and Swansea with an overseas trip to Portugal.
Sadly didn’t help us to get off to a flyer did it?
