Why Derby County owner David Clowes left Bristol Rovers with a massive trophy in his hands Latest Derby County news from DerbyshireLive brings you an explanation as David Clowes brings back the Watney Cup from Bristol Rovers Derby County are chasing automatic promotion in League One and some still believe the title is up for grabs.
But Rams owner David Clowes has already managed to get his hands on one piece of silverware after bringing the Watney Cup back home from Bristol Rovers at the weekend. Pictures of him holding the cup emerged over the weekend and it will be heading to Pride Park where it will be placed in the trophy cabinet once again. Derby were the first-ever winners of the competition that was founded in 1970 when they beat Manchester United 4-1. The trophy was created for the two highest-scoring teams in England's top four divisions - who hadn't been promoted or qualified for European football. Colchester, Bristol Rovers and Stoke City then won it in successive seasons before the competition was abolished in 1973. The competition earned its name through a sponsorship deal with Watney Mann Brewery and was the first tournament in English Football League clubs to sell its naming rights. There was an agreement in place to share the trophy with Stoke City four years ago after they made a request for it, but then it then ended up at Bristol Rovers.
Derby have spent several months in discussions with Rovers about the Watney Cup being returned to the Rams. And it was finally delivered back to Clowes, who is a die-hard Rams fan, at the weekend on the day they coasted to a 3-0 victory.
Clowes will be hoping that with Paul Warne's side flying high at the top of League One, it is not the only silverware the club gets its hands on this season.
Explaining how Derby got the trophy and speaking back in 2020, Andy Ellis, from the Rams Heritage Trust, told Radio Derby: "The Museum of Derby put on an exhibition in 1990 called Rams in Focus, which brought together a collection, all the trophies the club had and former players as part of a month-long exhibition in which the Watney Cup played a part.
"It arrived as part of that and the museum took it over. We've had it ever since. Stoke were the last winners and I'm guessing they think as last winners they should have ownership of it. But we were the first winners so there's an equal claim. It's not as if anyone has won it three times and get presented with it forever.
"We could argue that Colchester and Bristol Rovers have an equal claim as well. There are only four winners of the trophy. Whether we keep it in the Midlands and share it between the first and last winners forever, or whether we share it around the country, that's not my decision. Bristol Rovers had it on loan for a period in 1994 but Colchester have shown no interest at all as far as I'm aware - probably until now! They've got an equal claim to it."

Should go to the last team that won it surely as they are technically still the holders?

How can that statement be correct when they took back with them on Saturday?

Maybe have a rematch for the trophy? though based on current form perhaps not, or a fight... south stand ultras vs their away fans? no sitting down allowed. or in keeping with the 1970s Tote End vs their Pop side? or a drinking contest...party 7 challenge?

When it was on display in the Thatchers bar I was told it was Derby's but they'd seemed to have forgotten about getting it back.

Should go to the last team that won it surely as they are technically still the holders? The trophy was purchased by the Derby museum from the FA just after the completion was wound up. I assume it was given to Derby fc sometime after that. They had to relinquish it when they went into administration a few years ago and it was handed to Stoke. It would appear Stoke loaned it to us without Derbys knowledge from whst has been said. Derbys new owner has subsequently asked for the trophy back from Stoke and found out we had it.

I would hope that all 4 clubs can come to an agreement to share it on rotation to mark anniversaries.
Rovers won it in 1972 so for example it should be at Rovers in 2027 and 2032.

Think our south stand ultras should storm the Derby County trophy room and take back what’s rightfully ours !

We should’ve buried it under the pitch and told them it went missing.

We should’ve buried it under the pitch and told them it went missing. How do you know we gave the real one back? 😉

TBH I didn’t know we had a Trophy Room / Cabinet/ Shelf. Can't imagine we have many! I always found it strange how you can get a trophy for winning the play off final but not for automatic promotion (unless you come top!) Unless that's changed but pretty sure we got a trophy in 2007 but nothing for our subsequent automatic promotions?!

TBH I didn’t know we had a Trophy Room / Cabinet/ Shelf. There will be a massive trophy room in the new East Stand ready for our many future successes.
