I'm sure someone can help me out of my embarrassment. Someone asked me what the odd looking structure on top of the South stand at Eastville was. I had to admit that I wasn't sure - I thought it was a commentary vantage point on one level and perhaps some sort of 'executive' box on the other, but on the admittedly only few times I visited the old ground, only one was before it was demolished.

Thanks everyone - I wonder if it might have doubled up as a commentary vantage point for the dog racing?

I thought the press box was in the North Stand or did that only appear after the South Stand fire?

The wooden south stand at Eastville had 500 seats and a two storey press box when it was built.

My recollection having had season tickets in both the enclosure and the stand itself was that it was the local hospital radio commentary box.

I wonder what the real history actually is as it seems the stand was built for Bristol Harlequins RFC before Rovers moved into the ground years later, it seems odd a regional rugby club requiring a two storey press box, when the stand itself only held 500 fans.

I went in the Eastville south stand only a few times and can't remember looking up to see what was above. I started out aged 2 from the North stand, then later sometimes from the Tote End before being a regular from the North terrace; not the part in front of the North stand but the part of the terrace nearest to the away fans.
By the way... the North stand at Eastville was never actually finished being built.

Rovers acquired Eastville in 1897, the south stand was built during the 1920s.

Definitely not the press box as that was between the directors box and 2 rows of seats where I used to sit at Eastville in the South stand.
Pretty sure it was for hospital broadcasts .
Quite often had to tell the reporters who scored for Rovers as both me and my mate used to block their view when we scored and jumped in the air.
Graham Russell Robin Perry Roger Malone were frequently there and used to bang on the window to get us to sit down.Seems nothing has changed with our new South stand

The first commentary carried out by Bristol Hospital Broadcasting Service from Eastville in that box, was broadcast on 23rd August 1952 when Rovers played Shrewsbury Town. I am proud to have worked as a commentator between 2003 and 2022 when I decided I wanted an easier life on matchdays and retired. I still do the odd commentary when the regular team is very short.
Kind regards

Don’t doubt it became a commentary box in the following years.
