A lot of the game is about confidence. Players can find it difficult to deal with rejection and when they feel a decision has already been made not to renew their contract.
Players who feel unwanted can lose confidence, shy away from wanting the ball and taking any risks incase they are critised for making a mistake.
Of course some rise to the challange but different people have different coping strategies.
Consider too a player won't want to become injured and risk being left without a club.

Time to step up and show you want this as a job - whether it's with Rovers or someone else. Plenty of others have been rejected for what is effectively a high-paying yet fun job, so I have little sympathy for someone who is not grabbing the opportunity they have been given with both hands.

Of course a player could argue they have already shown they have what it takes to become a professional player but their confidence has been impacted by feeling unwanted and have to be careful not to get injured towards the end of a contract.

Players only love you when they're playing.

Does football work like that?JCH has hardly played this season but he'll still get a decent contract offer this summer. Manager's etc know players and will sign them on how they know they can play, not what they've done in the past few games of a season for us.

Football players can also be some of the most vindictive people employed in the world. Stuart Campbell and that mob proved that!

Many of us work or have worked on a contract basis, not knowing what comes after our contract ends. I seem to remember that in the NL most players were only on one year contracts. I guess that believing the team are safe in mid-table doesn't help and those that have something about them, but aren't expecting a new contract already have their agents working for them. Personally, even if Hoole, Finley, Sinclair don't get new contracts with us, I expect them to be playing league football next year. Sam Finley as an example, might want to return back to the North West I wouldn't be surprised if he was given a two year contract with a Div 2 team.

It will be interesting to see whether he does or not. Football is a very closed world and if someone has an attitude problem, there are few [unlike, in fairness, Barton] who would take them on. As you say he has hardly played and Peterborough are a grow and sell club. They would usually put someone like JCH on the pitch and in the shop window! The fact they haven't speaks volumes and potential clubs will ask themselves why.....

The fact they haven't speaks volumes and potential clubs will ask themselves why..... His goal record over the last 4 or 5 years will guarantee him plenty of good offers. There are not many goal scorers out there these days. P’Boro we’re working on the basis he was leaving last August and had committed to signing new players and adopting a different playing style - when our owners screwed up he was left in limbo (that’s how I recall events anyway!)

Plus the big possibility that Posh were expecting Brentford to sell Ivan Toney last summer which would have given them a huge percentage of a very large fee. I think Posh thought they could play more difficult which in a sense backfired on them with JCH these past windows. When Toney is sold in the Summer they will get their share of the transfer but they will have a large loss on what they could have got from JCH. But I doubt they will worry, having this huge windfall in the background. UTG!

I know the whole thing about form being temporary and class being permanent, but why would you not give 110% when you need a new contract in the next few months? Yes you might have contacts and such but you also don't know which scouts/coaches/managers might be in the stands watching any given game. Whilst they might be happy with a league two contract next season on two-thirds of their current wages, but why are they not considering a Championship club might be recruiting for their position and one or two good games might mean they can sign for them on double their current wages...?

What Championship club is going to sign any of our unwanted players?
The fact that Gibson, after a shocking spell with us, got a loan deal to another L1 club suggests that clubs take no notice of how they are performing at another club.

When players talk about uncertain futures that is the life of footballers with contracts coming to a end with the 9 players out of contract plus another 3 on contract options I would expect most of them to be gone the player out on loan is Gibbon

Football players can also be some of the most vindictive people employed in the world. Stuart Campbell and that mob proved that! Agreed Campbell wrecked Penny's career and ensured our relegation. The only thing Buckle did right was getting him out of the club.

Most of our players are probably being paid more than what they are worth. Who is out of contract, that has shown that they are worth a similar deal with us or elsewhere at this level?? Unless played step up, they are unlikely to get a deal that is close to what they are currently on. Then they have to factor in moving costs etc on top of this.

Most live in rented accommodation, I doubt moving costs are an issue and the way football works they probably get their moving costs paid by their new clubs. If our out of contract players thought that giving 100% would help them get a better deal, then why aren't they giving 100% every match?

During the extended highlights you could see that Taylor and Baggott seemed to be on a go slow and although we played some good moves the finishing lacked conviction. Conteh showed the kind of determination that is required, but was a lone trier.

Peterborough are not going to play JCH unless they really need to because he will no doubt be on both appearance and goal bonuses. Its not as if they are going to benefit in the long run as he is going to be a free agent in the transfer window.

Arthur Scargill is still around I see. Possibly the guys employed by brfc to represent the club on the football pitch are in liaison's with him? Would possibly explain various activities and actions since the previous manager departed.

Its not as if they are going to benefit in the long run as he is going to be a free agent in the transfer window. Are you sure? Promotion isn’t beneficial either short term or long term? He may well be on appearance and goal bonuses but they are fighting for promotion and are in with a chance of automatic. With nil points on Saturday I bet playing JCH or even bringing him on as a sub for 30 minutes might have been a good thing. To not do so and then lose the match which they sound as if they played well but only had 1 shot on target sounds pretty daft to me. Seems like their transfer policy goes against a policy of trying to get promotion. Whatever we think of him he has a fantastic scoring record at this level. I think getting promotion would be beneficial in the long run. Plain bl**** daft. UTG!
