With one month left in the 2023/2024 season it is worthwhile reflecting on some aspects of the on-field picture.
Just a brief synopsis of the 38 LEAGUE fixtures played this season.
Manager A (J.B.) * August to November *
PLAYED * 18
WIN * 6
DRAW * 6
LOSS * 6
POINTS * 24
During this spell there were six 1-1 draws. There were a couple of emphatic home victories. There was only one home league defeat.
Manager B (M.T.) * December to March *
PLAYED * 20
WIN * 8
DRAW * 2
LOSS * 10
POINTS * 26
During this spell seven of the eight victories were by the odd goal. Draws were something of a rarity. Several unexpected scorelines occurred.
Summarising the season by monthly results indicates a consistently inconsistent pattern.
There is very little evidence of a sequence of league results: either positive or negative.
August and September *
PLAYED * 9 * WIN * 3 * DRAW * 3 * LOSS * 3 * POINTS * 12
October and November *
PLAYED * 9 * WIN * 3 * DRAW * 3 * LOSS * 3 * POINTS * 12
December and January *
PLAYED * 10 * WIN * 4 * DRAW * 1 * LOSS * 5 * POINTS * 13
February and March *
PLAYED * 10 * WIN * 4 * DRAW * 1 * LOSS * 5 * POINTS * 13
With 8 matches remaining, 5 at home and 3 away, a total of 9 or 10 points is likely.
Ending the season with 59 or 60 points will probably mean a mid-table finish of about 13th or 14th.

At least we're not consistently bad and still on target for a top half finish, possibly with the highest finish for 6 years or so. But it hasn't been as good as hoped under MT, I have to admit.

Just seen the tweet this afternoon saying back to work at the Quarters. If that’s the case the players have been off since the debacle at Lincoln. I sincerely hope that leads to three points this Friday at Port Vale.

I saw that as well and it falls into line with Finland and the Gas Girls using The Quarters last week, you do wonder if it was just fake anger MT was showing about players "checking out" etc, when it now seems the whole senior side of the club checked out last week.

Yes, a few days off MT had said and that equates to eight days off.

Yes I did hope for three points this Friday and had already expressed concern on this forum about the players being given time off immediately after the last game after hearing our managers after match thoughts. Personally I think 8/9 days off is an absolute joke after that fiasco.

Apart from Andy Mangan's brief tenure, we've consistently averaged a low points per game this season, whether it was under Barton or Taylor.
Inspirational stuff.

Statistically it's too small a sample (P5 W2 D2 L1 Pts8) to judge him. One more game that's a loss and his points-per-game is almost identical to Barton and Taylor and across 46 games he'd finish just below halfway in the table. One more game that's a win and he's not far off a points-per-game that would give us automatic promotion.
