In the Champions League Manchester United were embarrassingly bad and Newcastle failed to progress from a competitive group. Arsenal and Manchester City you could argue lost tight knock out games to strong sides.
In the Europa League Brighton did well to get through their group in their first season in Europe but then lost heavily to Roma. Liverpool were beaten convincingly by Atalanta. West Ham were unlucky to lose to the invincible Bayer Leverkusen.
In the Europa Conference League Aston Villa did well to get to the semi finals but then lost heavily to Greek side Olympiacos.
It is often said that because the Premier League is so competitive and every game is hard that English teams are then too tired for Europe, but the teams at the bottom of the league have very low points totals this season. Also squads are bigger than ever and more subs are allowed.
On the other hand, last season English clubs won 2 European trophies so maybe it's just an anomaly?
