Martin Thomas was my absolute hero as a boy … great keeper.
I remember a game at Eastville when he had conceded a goal and the opposition keeper was playing a blinder …
After one particularly good stop a Big Gob from the crowd shouts “ Watch and Learn Thomas “ to which my hero replied”f**k Off” …
Reaction from the crowd was brilliant … they roared with laughter at the fool who had shouted out … No crowd melt down … No headlines in the Green ‘Un … One of the many moments that has stayed with me watching the Gas.
Nigel Martyn was also a great keeper … When he first signed for Rovers I bumped into him in Kingswood Sainsbury’s … he was at the fruit and veg counter and dropped a watermelon on the floor - we both burst out laughing and I told him his handling skills were a safe secret with me. That is until now - so don’t tell anyone !

I think it’s obvious Ward’s career is on the up especially now involved at England level. Think sometimes we have to recognise and appreciate what we’ve got before someone else comes in and takes him away. Yes we’ve secured him on a longer deal and let’s say a championship club came in for him - some would say he'll just sit on their bench but he could very well go on to prove himself a very capable number one. Be careful what you wish for.

On this point it is nothing to do with being careful what you wish for. I wish I could honestly say that Jed Ward is good enough to be number 1 at this time but imo he is nowhere near good enough or tall and strong enough to start at the moment as number 1. Whenever a corner or cross came in he was lost and there was no understanding between the defenders and him but this is a common thing with young keepers and why all successful teams have an experienced keeper.Nigel Martyns rise to fame was one in a million but he had size in his favour and was perfectly built to be a keeper. It is even more important in League 1 and 2 to be built to face the physical aspects of the game. Backa generation 6foot was considered the ideal height for a keeper-very few under 6ft made it in League football and certainly not for an extended period. That figure is now probably nearer 6ft 5!! Anyway I am sure the Manager will realise that we need a new experienced number 1 and that person will not be coming in as a number 2. Dawson certainly was not being brought in to be a number 2 and would have started as number 1. As for the other keeper Hall I would say he was nowhere near League football standard.

"not tall enough" not true The crossing thing is not backed up by the stats. Maybe a poor defence didnt help, and with a preseason between him and the new stronger defence this should prove less of an issue. Would like an experience back up but believe Ward should and will start as No.1 All about opinions tho of course, but we should give him a little slack whilst he is learning as there is no doubt he is destined for an impressive career.

We get it Steve, you have just repeated the same rubbish 3 times on one thread, stats don't back up what you say about crosses into the box, also this problem you have with his height is ridiculous, I stood next to Jed and had a chat with him at Melksham and Jed is taller than me and I'm 6ft 1. to say he is nowhere good enough For L1 or L2 football is just wrong. Jed is constantly being watched by Premier League/Championship scouts

We are not saying Jed won't be able to become a very good goalie in the future . What we are saying he is not ready at this particular time. He needs more experience and bulking up. Like Steve I shuddered every time we had a corner against us last season and people saying it was the defence that let him down. As we had many players who played in the defence was it all of them ? He does not command his area and probably the defenders have not got the confidence they should have in him. We definately need a more commanding experienced goalie if we're going to challenge for a top half finish.

Surely it's down to MT to decide if he's good enough not just a handful of forum posters?
Belshaw was an experienced goalie but not sure he would have done much better than JW last season.
I can't recall many fans saying JW wasn't good enough when he virtually single handedly won us the game at Exeter with a bit of help from BA.

I have to admit im never confident with Jed on corners. I dont think its anything to do with his height though just doesnt seem to be physically strong enough to command his box

Anyone remember Paul Cooper ? Keeper for Ipswich town during the Bobby Robson era. Won an FACup final and UEFA cup there during his time and i think came runners up in Division one (AS it was called back them, prem league these days).
He was 5ft11.
You cant tell me footy in the 70s and 80s wasnt rough with pkenty of high balls into the box.

Eddie Hopkinson Goalkeeper who defied his diminutive stature as a stalwart of Bolton and England The Bolton Wanderers and England goalkeeper Eddie Hopkinson "was the greatest in one-to-one situations I ever played with or against or have ever seen," was the tribute paid by left-back Tommy Banks to his club colleague, who has died aged 69. Hopkinson's ability to thwart the oncoming forward compensated for his lack of inches, and his consequent occasional trouble with the high cross. Standing only 5ft 8in, he was a sturdy, stalwart contrast to the giant goalkeepers of today. Ever fearless, he would have words with any opponent who, he felt, had with his challenge gone beyond the bounds of fair play.

We had our own short goalkeeper in the 70's, anyone remember Richard Crabtree, I think he was only 5ft 9" - 5ft 10", only played a few games for us as we had the mighty Jim Eadie, I did see him play at Villa Park, pretty sure he was up against Andy Lochead, what a miss match.

I dont think its anything to do with his height though just doesnt seem to be physically strong enough to command his box If he was already brilliant at everything he wouldn't still be at Rovers, hopefully, commanding his penalty area is something he can work on this pre-season with the new goalie coach.

Alan Hodgkinson, Sheffield Utd legend and England keeper was 5’9” and played in the top flight for many years. Discovered Peter Schmeical( apologise for spelling) and was his first goalkeeping coach and highly praised by Peter when he passed away 10 years or so ago.

Jed Ward is 1.88 (6'2).
Nigel Martyn? Exactly the same.
Sorry Steve, that part of your argument doesn't have any legs. 😎🏴☠️
