The average finishing position of the first five teams we played last season was 10th. P5 W1 D2 L2 GD-2 2022/23 it was 14th - P5 W2 D0 L3 GD-1 2021/22 (promotion season) the average finishing position of the first five teams we played was 15th and our record was P5 W1 D1 L3 GD-5 Not sure the opposition is the problem, we're not constantly drawn to start against all the promotion candidates... So the sats proved my thoughts, most of the teams we play in the first half a dozen or so fixtures end the season above us in the table, given we seem to play more games away from home plus a cup tie we usually lose, that's clearly not helping us got off to a good start. You can't say that finishing 10th, 14th and 15th proves your point! Maybe if they'd finished in the top three, but even at an extreme stretch you can't say you've been proved right that we face better teams. Mediocre ones maybe. You also can't suggest the FA are making us play teams who finish above us. It's the start of the season and nobody, not even you, knows where each will finish.

Could this be something to do with the number of new signings we fans demand the club make every season, and how long it takes to knit them together into a cohesive unit?

What's mediocre about Portsmouth, Ipswich(cup), Barnsley, Charlton and Wycombe? We'd do well to avoid defeat against those 5 teams at any point of the season. The previous season we had Barnsley and Portsmouth again and unsurprisingly lost both away games. In the Garner relegation season we started with Ipswich(cup), Sunderland, Ipswich & Doncaster, once we got those fixtures out of the way results improved. This season's start looks just as tough on paper, with Cardiff(cup), Rotherham and Stockport, I just hope for a change that we beat Northampton on the opening day.

We are normally away first game which also doesn't help. Having said that, I can only remember loosing when playing home first as well!
There used to be another stat I would go on about where after beating Southampton away in 2009, we didn't beat another of the big ex prem teams away from home for like another 15 years! Think beating Ipswich in GC's last game ended that run. Must have been more than 30 odd games away to these sort of sides without a win!

This season's start looks just as tough on paper, with Cardiff(cup), Rotherham and Stockport, I just hope for a change that we beat Northampton on the opening day. But the first five league games were Portsmouth A (1st), Barnsley H (6th), Charlton A (16th), Cambridge A (18th) and Wycombe H (10th). So if we want to be above average we should be looking at 9-10 points from those games but we got just 5. In the Garner relegation season the first five league games were Sunderland A (4th), Ipswich H (9th), Doncaster A (14th), Northampton H (22nd) and Lincoln A (5th). Slightly tougher but still not out of the realms of possibility to take 9-10 rather than the 7 we got... ...and TBF in that season the problem wasn't so much the start, more that it took us until our 40th game to get our tenth league win...

Yeah we seem to lose or draw on the rare occasions we are at home. I think one of those defeats may have been Northampton Town with JJ O'Toole getting the only goal. Lets hope its different this season!
