One of my bugbears is the half hearted preaching to the converted marketing from the club.
No doubt a lot of fairweather fans won't know the later ko for the first game of the season.
The board have paid out big bucks (for Rovers anyway), so I would hope for a 10,000 plus gate for the first game.
Tell your friends, family, workmates, schoolmates, people down the pub etc
Personally, I think the fact we are home first game of the season is massive. Usually, by the time we have played at home, we have lost in the league and are out of the cup.
Let's support the owners by filling the Mem, the bars and the fanzone in a sea of new shirts.

Great Post.
One fantastic "thing" about standing is a season ticket holder can take a mate and stand aside them. No admin to sort seats together. No need to buy 6 ticket at once.
Love a sunny August fixture. Just bring a cap- if youre in the east terrace.

Should be a good atmosphere, especially with six hours drinking time before kick off, what could possibly go wrong 🤔

I would seriously contact the club. At the very least there would be the token picture in the programme (and big screen?), but the club may do something to mark the special day. I remember one midweek game years ago where we were struggling to get a decent attendance for hospitality. Graham Bowen "Bo" the then commercial manager looked through old records and found the match was exactly 3 years after someones 18th at Twerton. He was proactive and contacted his Dad and arranged a special deal where the son and about 6-7 mates from uni where he was studying, his mates from the area he grew up and family had a couple of tables. The bar takings were pretty decent. If memory serves, the family came from near Bath and had only been to the Mem a few times, so quite a bid of additional income was raised by Bo's clever thinking. When I was a kid, both Graham Withey and Micky Barrett's girlfriends both lived closed to Whitehall junior school and they turned up a couple of times to do training sessions and give away vouchers for cheap tickets. I assume this was initiated by the club? I suppose the lack of local players means that wouldn't happen now, but if the club and players went into the local community, I'm sure that would attract more support. With the Pirates image the Harbour Festival would be a good link. Not sure if the Community Trust get involved in this at all?

Great to kickoff the new season with a home game for a change, should be a cracking atmosphere with the south stand now in full use unlike the early part of last season. The influx of what appears to be quality signings & things starting to happen regards the stadium, should give most fans a more positive confidence for the new campaign. Utg.

isnt it a bit early to be building up to the first game? it usually starts in the few days before the last friendly and builds from there

Yes exactly. If your out for a couple after work, or bump into some fairweather Gas over the weekend, or visiting relatives, especially with young kids, its a good time.

I think the last time we won first game of the season is still the win at Wimbledon under buckle could be wrong ? We had it handed to us on a plate last season too and still lost.

Someone said on another thread the crowd is it is less than 8,000 so far.
TBH, that's pretty poor, as it is what the 3rd home league start in ten years and the club has smashed the transfer record.
I've not seen any advertising or promotion of the match. Up to us to pass in the info to other fans.
Ps, what's the betting that someone turns up at 2.45 ready to stroll into the match?

Ps, what's the betting that someone turns up at 2.45 ready to stroll into the match? Well I suppose that's better than them turning up at that time only to find out it was a 12:30 ko!

Back to the pub for more valuable drinking time.

I would be very pleased if the gate is anything over 8k. Will be going with two of my boys and our pals, lets hope this new group of players have it about them to get the season off to a winning start. UTG

You'd like to think we'd get close to or above 10,000 but it's middle of August, plenty of fans on holiday, the games is live on Sky+ and it's an unusual kick off time. It sounds like Northampton have struggled to sell out, hence why more tickets available for us in the South Stand. I mentioned on the season ticket thread that I'd imagine season ticket sales nationwide are probably lower when you consider at least 10 home matches will be live on Sky, I think it will be a difficult year to gauge attendances.

Lots of positivity from the first two league games on the pitch. A week of training to help the players get used to each other should help. There are though a few Stadium issues to sort out but like the original post, as a club, we dont seem very good at promoting Rovers to new fans. I know kids prices are an issue but as supporters, I'm sure "word of mouth" from us can help. If you go to the pub with your mates, talk about your weekend at work, see family, your kids go to school or a club etc, why not praise the club on the things it is doing well and try to help increase attendances, which in turn increases revenue and hopefully makes even better atmospheres at games. I have a few moans, so have contacted the club. If you have any comments that that can make fellow Gasheads day at the Mem more enjoyable, or stress free, why not let the club know. I suspect that some of the decision makers are not football fans and may not even be aware of the issues of the regular supporters. I doubt if TG's replacement(s) has been in every bog, or tried a burnt pasty, or tried to get a drink at half time, or tried to get their Mrs a rum and coke, or vodka and orange only to find the bar doesn't stock them etc. They should know, but if they are made aware, they might be able to sort some of them. Let's all try and bring a friend and get 10,000 for the next home game. UTG

UTG Why can't he visit every bog etc it's not like we're part of a multi national company and he hasn't had time to get to Bristol or speak to fans on game day? It's all down to whether or not the owners are prepared to spend money to improve the match day experience, not that they are not aware of most of the issues.
