I'm not usually a fan of this as I would prefer a settled side.
However, the game has changed so much, with very high tempo and players putting their bodies to the physical max, playing 100+ minutes, the diving that goes on getting players suspended, the effective banning of tackles and the hotter temperatures.
I suspect that we have around at least 18 players that will start matches in the first 5 games. That's more than Villa used in the entire season when they won the league in the early 80's.

I think Villa only used 14 players that season in the league and mostly the same starting 11.

Not sure if it was the promotion season? Penrice had the nickname Lasarus as he got off his sick bed countless times to play

Remember Percy got injured and Martyn and Penrice were sold, so their replacements plus Hazel, Browning, Sealy, Willmott,, Crawley etc meant at least 20 were used in the season.

Cannot remember if Billy 'The Judge' Clark played that season.

Definately a squad of 14 in the 1988/89 season. 18 squad next season when promoted At the time I was very interested in team squads, I remember the Sheffield Wednesday team in our Division 2 season had 17 players which surprised me for a team that big. Hull City had over 30 in their squad photo including 4 goalkeepers.

I'm all for consistency but the comparisons to 30-40 years ago is meaningless. At that point (and at our level) the only thing some of our opponents would have bothered to research about us was having a look for our result in the paper the previous Saturday.
Nowadays you need to adapt your formation (and to a certain extent your playing style) game by game or the opponents will be prepared to counter it from the kick-off. You need to allow for the greater toll on the body (especially from certain players in certain positions).
Plus there is the 'x' factor we didn't have 30+ years ago. It's hard to put it into words but I think you'll know what I mean. In the 70s/80s you knew most of your first XI would give it their all 100% for every game. They may not have had the most talent but they performed to the best they could every minute of every game. I'm not sure we get that from a lot of modern players and therefore you have to be ready to drop some of them if/when they underperform...

The thing is if you have a Bannister/Warboys or a Lambert/Walker or a Cureton/Roberts or a Hayles/Ellington you will be there or thereabouts. i don't see a prolific scorer other than possibly Martin and was hoping we would have a marque signing of a striker who had scored 15-20 in a season.

Definately a squad of 14 in the 1988/89 season. 18 squad next season when promoted Are you sure about that? After just 10 league games we had used the following 17 players according to bristolroversmemorabilia.weebly.comMartyn Stapleton Twentyman Clark Mehew Jones Holloway Reece White Penrice Purnell Alexander Smith Dryden McClean Viney Yates EDIT: In the end we used 22 players but 7 of them made 5 or fewer appearances, so I see what you mean when you factor that in, and that effectively Dennis Bailey replaced Paul Smith.
