Great signing for a club at our level. We just need a hungry striker now to finish in the top half I think

Suspect we’re managing expectations better than we ever did under Buckle.

It's been over 25 years since we last did it so it's definitely overdue, though we've also only finished top half once in the past 10 years so that would represent a very good season as well. Here's hoping UTG

We’ve potentially got the defence of a playoff chasing team but must be huge doubts over our ability to create chances and score goals required for a playoff challenge.

If the owners have given MT a similar budget to last season's plus around £1m in transfer funds then I can't see they are just aiming for mid table.

But we don't know what the top 6-8 clubs offer in playing budgets and fees . Is £1 million on fees or P.B of £4 million that big at this level ?. And it's interesting that bookies and other pundits suggest we will finish 14-18th. Probably the truth is somewhere in the middle. We are not big hitters like Brum Hudd Bolton Charlton Petero Rother Wrexham nether are we a freebie club.

That's at least progress. The owners do not want us getting promoted yet. They said as much at the q and a. They said we are not ready to go up as we'd come straight back down and that is not what we want to do. I'm pretty sure he said 3 years for promotion was the aim once we had the infrastructure etc to enable us to make a decent attempt at staying up and becoming an established championship club.

Yes and this is reflected in the type of players we have signed. Barton's last season seemed like a go for broke attempt whereas now we are building a hopefully solid base.

Ii for one would love to aim for the play offs but we haven’t got enough goals in us, lots of 1-0’s happy days but can’t see us scoring 60 goals which would equate to 50-60 points in my view

All the above stuff about us not being ready for promotion is probably right but not sure that this time last year Oxford would have been ready for promotion. Thing with football is that the unexpected happens with a surprise team showing up well over a season. Until they blew up at the end Stevenage were looking good for at least a play off place which was a big surprise. I don’t think we’ll go up this season but I’m never sure that planning for promotion in ‘3 years’ ever works. You can plan to get better and start to build a decent squad but if you ever get the chance to clinch promotion you go for it however far outside the expectations that may be.
We take every game at a time, try to win it and move on. Always been the way to do anything especially in the modern world when managers don’t often get the privilege of having 3 years to do anything.
I’m old enough to remember the 73-74 promotion and Don M was able to build his squad over the two years before we actually went up. He was able to add Mike Green and Trevor Jacobs to the defence he inherited and added Dobson and Stephens to the midfield and Warboys and Eadie the season before we went up. I hope Matt T gets the same amount of time. Without checking I think it was only Green and Jacobs added in pre season ‘73.
We won’t, but if we were challenging seriously in April I hope we would really go for it. The infrastructure would not be there but you can’t wait you just have to go for it and take opportunities when they come.
UTG!
