Next 3 games are important especially wycombe and burton. Let's wait and see what happens. The end of October is the BIG challenge. Last season Pompey Oxford top 2 . Fleetwood Cheltenham Carlisle Reading ( points deduction) bottom 4. You don't need an expert to tell you based on stats that's about 80-90% confirmation . The only team to reverse this stat is Reading who would be a giant in division two and were in a false position. I would give Taylor 4-6 weeks .

We had 7 points from 8 games in League 2. That was at the same stage as Taylor now, first full season with a new squad. That's the season to compare. Barton had years to build last seasons squad. I think we can go around in circles and the reality is both our views are split on this forum. The main thing is the here and now. If teams play there game in hand we probably will be in the relegation zone. Therefore the next month is key for Taylor. If you look at data 3 out of the 4 teams who were in bottom four in late October were relegated. Port Vale was the shocker who blew it in the last months. Once your in the zone and points behind then pressure really builds. A cheltenham fan told me that at Glos cricket . Let's hope Taylor can win 3 out of next 6 games . Its a challenge and there's nothing wrong with targets. I said he should go, if it doesn't improve soon. I was just making the point that we were the same under previous managers as the same stage. Did you call for Barton to be sacked, when he had a worse record than this in League 2? If not, the Taylor deserves the same treatment. A massive few weeks for Taylor. I said give him ten games, but if we suffer another poor home performance on Saturday, that could be it. Like you say, we don't want to get adrift. We need a settled team. Taylor still doesn't know his best side, he's still learning about the squad and we are struggling for goals. He better learn soon. A lot will also depend on who else wants the job.

The end of October is where I'd reassess where we are, and any decision to change should be done before the start of December so a new manager can be sounded out, interviewed and brought in to give them time in the January window to adjust the squad.
Ideally though, I would hope MT can sort things out as I'd rather avoid more disruption.

Saturday is crucial as if we can't perform well v Wycombe then it's unlikely things will improve v Charlton.

We're in such a mess I've no idea what our starting 11 will be!!

Anybody watching will be fearing the worst for Saturday as Wycombe reserves are decent. As for us having a week off. That's not a positive at all imo.

If that's true I can't see the logic of Wycombe putting out a reserve side against Villa's reserve side! I was hoping they'd play a reasonably full strength side when we've got a week off (not that usually makes any difference anyway).

As you well know, stats do not always tell a true reflection on everything and you can always twist stats to suit any agenda. I should know as I spend every day using and manipulating stats to support decision make and arguments in my job. I challenge you to twist any of those stats to give the appearance that we are doing ok or making improvements or in fact been better than any of the results have suggested…. Football is not black and white - it is full of variables and influences and heavily directed by the individuals on the pitch. Stats only portray a partial picture and having watched pretty much every game last and this season I can see that there is improvement in our overall general play, our variation between passing approach play and a more direct style with more crossfield passes etc …. Agree with that but I simply cannot understand where or how you think there is an improvement in our play? The perception of so many individual performances are so far removed from what they are actually doing based on things ranging from their perceived “pressing” which amounts to little more than chasing crisp packets in the wind, to the “that’s the best we’ve been with the ball” when it was less possession than the previous game, to a fan favourite based on the fact he’s a lovely lad and smiles loads which has bought him a shed load of patience on his actual performances to the “he’s finding the step into league one tough” when he’s been no worse than regular league one players, to the “it’s a young squad” when it’s actually older than our opponents, to the “we’re so solid defensively” when the GK has had 5 MoMs in 7 games…..it’s a load of nonsense and anyone who’s played coached or watched a lot of football can see it and being taken for a fool is just insulting and condescending by the manager. under MT it is a high press energetic defend from the front and a focus on defend first to create the platform. This high press nonsense is exactly that too. The “high press” has been fed by fans who for some reason have been massively impressed by a few players playing crap but winning approval for running around chasing crisp packets in the wind. An actual high press involves a co-ordinated effort to force play one direction using tactical set up and various “traps” to encourage teams to do something that you’ve preempted and are ready to take the ball from them when they either fall into the trap or run out of options or take the ball into trouble. It involves every single player and is a tactical way of defending that involves incredible energy. We have shown the energy but I see no evidence whatsoever of any tactical plan to execute it. but our naivety of youth has cost us and it will take time to bed in with such a young squad and a complete overhaul in players, philosophy and style this season. It’s not that young a squad! MT made my sh** itch Saturday when he said they play like a development squad!! That’s as big an insult he can throw at his own players as is humanly possible!!! They are making naive mistakes because every single player looks sh** scared of taking the ball and being brave enough to be a game changer. MT is making them feel like development players by criticising everything that doesn’t actually come off and shouting and screaming at players to tell them what to do because he doesn’t trust them to make their own decision and think for themselves. It is also heavily confidence based and influenced with such young players I can see that confidence is shot to sh**. My prediction is the next few games we’ll go more direct because the manager shows no belief in his players and can feel it. Players aren’t reacting naturally to any given situation they’re ponderous and second guessing themselves and that’s a clear sign of lacking confidence. I actually think he’s done. I think the players are done with him already. In my opinion we can’t align last season to this as last season had so many impacting differential factors - completely different squad, different philosophies that had been brought in under 3 different managers, different player profiles etc… That’s lower league football for you. Bjt by now even if we aren’t free flowing I’d expect to see evidence of a plan of a system of a pattern. I see none. In fact it’s got worse in my eyes. I know you like to scout and you are very reliant on your stats but surely as a scout you recognise that that doesn’t account for personality, human behaviours and personal life influences, confidence Of course. I agree with this completely. But I think that’s a problem the manager is displaying too!! What allowance has he made for players to settle in? To adjust to life at a new club on a new city with new team mates? He’s just dragged them off, left them out or bombed them from the squad completely. He’s almost demanded that they are devoid of human behaviours and he’s done nothing to assist confidence levels particularly from our creative players who rely on that the most. Having managed football teams, it is completely different to scouting and there are so many multi dimensional aspects to every game and so many things that influence the end result - many that the manager has no control over (referee decision making, players making individual errors or mistakes to name but 2)…. Agree but give me one game that we’ve lost or dropped points this season due to a referee decision? Individual errors have largely come from poor tactical decisions and poor coaching, whether it’s a mistake or poor technique to execute a situation or a complete inability to be able to retain possession or constrict attacks that prevent opposition from dominating games. The goals conceded Saturday were as a result of player mistakes not anything coached and once the 2nd went in, we were devoid of confidence in that first half. Disagree. Player mistakes were actually a result of poor coaching poor selection and poor positioning. That’s the coaches job to have it right. Confidence was shot before we kicked off and that tells me they have no confidence in the man in charge or his methods. Your stats paint a picture but not the whole picture and definitely does not give a clear view on whether performances have been generally improved or not….Just my opinion that I know many won’t agree with It’s a fair opinion and I like your post in general and it’s well thought out and written - personally I just don’t agree with it 🤣😜 Fair challenges ….. and I haven’t done this but in the stats Pirate quoted they are for all games played in the league …. However not all teams have played the same opposition and so some have had perceived easier games than others etc. Also the stats don’t take into account what happened or the context within the games themselves - e.g. did any of the teams play a significant proportion of any game where the opposition had less players on the team due to injury or sendings off in which case potentially it could be expected that they would create more chances, have higher expected goals and more shots etc - just look at the difference in the Man City v Arsenal stats between first half when it was 11 v 11 and 2nd half where Trossard had been sent off… We’re any games played where the opposition had excessive injuries within the squad and therefore had to play a weaker team? What I’m saying is not that I’m disputing the stats because they are what they are but to be completely fair and reflective you would have to compare the stats of performances of Teams who had only played the same opposition and even then you could potentially argue that there are other variables to consider such as who was at home v away, night v day game, weather conditions etc… you only fully rely on stats when it is a 100% direct comparison which these are not. Your point re player mistakes is that you blame it on poor coaching, I’ve coached players and you cannot account for things like loss of concentration, or poor decision making as ultimately you can advise someone and coach them on what to do in certain situations but they have the final decision making process when on the pitch and they make decisions based upon best intent and second guessing what will happen next. At lower league level they won’t get it right 100% of the time - even if they have been coached correctly - and that is why the players are at lower league level. Even at the highest level, players make mistakes or poor decisions and that isn’t and can’t solely be placed at the manager’s door - it’s why some players can be so frustrating. We’ll need to agree to disagree when it comes to pattern and style of play. I can definitely see an intent in what I have watched, there are common moves and structures we look to operate with. I agree that it’s not always executed particularly effectively but some of that is down to the opposition and how they have countered us. I agree with you in that I don’t think we’re clear on our best midfield set up and are suffering from inconsistency in partnerships in there. I think some of that is that players like Hutchinson who is extremely talented is finding the step up to League 1 more difficult than expected, Ward is being protected so his injuries don’t reoccur, Shaw for me is raw and imo isn’t ready to start matches - he’d be better as an impact player, Conteh is our strongest but can’t do everything and I think could have been fatigued in the last game from international playing, Lindsay has been injured and Garrett is again a talent but suffers from what all young players suffer from which is inconsistency due to naivety of youth. With the exception of Ward they are all barely out of academy football… (they are all in their early 20s and nowhere near where they would be considered reaching their prime)… so they are going to make mistakes and be inconsistent… Your comment on press - there are different tactics to the high press, it can be individual led or coordinated it doesn’t have to be the latter. The high press means that as a team you have a philosophy that you will structure to try and steal the ball high into the opposition half when they are in possession but the tactics vary depending on the percentage likelihood of winning it and where the ball is…. If it’s in a position where you are likely to be able to steal and in transition create a positive event and attacking moment where the likelihood of creating an improved chance or positive positioning event then you press in multiple numbers and in a coordinated approach, if it’s a lower probability situation then typically you’ll see a loan press from the forward or midfielder who will just try to create a forced rushed pass or error and teammates will typically stick to marking their players to block or minimise outlets for the player with the ball. The high press just means that you will typically close early rather than sit back and create block structures that the opposition have to try and break down / through… For me, I just think that the criticism being levelled is unfair at present and it’s too early to be passing judgement. It could well be that they may be right but I think we have to give him a fair chance. I do think we’ll end up mid table this year and whilst I don’t know for certain but I think that’s the aim - a season to consolidate. If we do better then we’ve exceeded expectations and overachieved this season… do worse and they have all underperformed… 👍

The cavalry didn't help either but regardless of the result, Wycombe were very good. Perhaps they are focusing on the league whilst getting valuable minutes into the stiffs? Makes perfect sense really.
