Oh for the days with left-back Vaugham Jones rarely going over the halfway line. Left winger Phil Purnel overlapping out wide and either getting in an early cross or getting forwards staying out wide to stretch the opposition defence. At right-back former winger Ian Alexander getting far forwards, covered by fast right-sided central-defender Steve Yates. At right-wing was former striker Boris getting into the box. It wasn't rocket scence but it was effective. I had a thought...
Parkin = Griffiths
Alexander = Hunt
Yates = Moore/Mola
Twentyman = Wilson/Taylor
Jones = Senior/Sousa/Mola
Boris = LT/Sotiriou/Hutchinson
Reece = Conteh
Holloway = Ward/Lindsay
Purnell = Sinclair/Bilongo
White = Promise/Martin
Penrice/Saunders = Forde/O'Donkor/Shaw
Which 11 of the current squad would you select to be most alike in style to the 89/90 team?

TBH absolutely none of them.
Fitness wise and technically they are miles better now,but the team spirit and organisation got the Gerry squad through at times.
The styles are totally different.
If pushed, Promise could have fitted into Bruno's role (if he had someone to run into headers now that would make Promise look so much better) but hard to compare.

The 89/90 team could play full matches at a very high intensity.
4 of the 89/90 Rovers team went onto play in the Premier League.

Two utterly different eras that are completely incomparable. Like comparing the 1990 side to the 1956 side it's that long ago.

Why is it incomparable to ask which of the current players could most likely play in the style of the 89/90 team?

Why is it incomparable to ask which of the current players could most likely play in the style of the 89/90 team? The game has changed an absurd amount. From style to even the laws of the game. It's chalk and cheese.

Griffiths = decent shot stopper like Parkin.
Hunt - gets forward like Alexander Moore - like Steve Yates, can move out to cover for right-back going forwards Wilson - experienced and not quick; like Twentyman. Senior - could be most like Vaughan Jones.
LT - Cuts inside to take a shot like Boris. Conteh - Keeps it simple like Andy Reece. Ward - the most like Ollie. Sinclair - Phil Purnel.
Promise - holds the ball up like Devon White. Forde - movement like Penrice and Saunders.

It's chalk and cheese. It's not really though is it? For all you can big up tactics and formations, it's still 22 blokes chasing a ball around with a third in defence, a third in midfield and a third in attacking roles. Hardly chalk and cheese. I don't see why you can't compare them. It's easy actually and it's what we've been doing on this thread.
