It is easy to give credit to manager's achieving promotion but it's also important to credit others who do a good job under difficult circumstances. Bobby Gould did a fantastic job ensuring Rovers didn't get relegated from the league in which we currently find ourselves. Gould gave youngsters their first full-season - Gary Penrice, John Scales, Tim Carter, and Nick Tanner. All went onto the Premier League as we now know it. Scales went onto play for England. Gould brought Gerry Francis and Kenny Hibbitt to the club. When Gerry became manager, Gerry inherited an ethos at the club of maximum effort, fans with low expectations and forgiving of players making mistakes.
Have a read of this, the comments by Bobby Gould and Kenny Hibbitt

But left to join Coventry and fell out with Paul Randall and many others TBF Paul Randall was a great talent †hat wasn't fully realised. It must have been frustrating at times. Randall left Rovers to join non-league Yeovil.

Rovers were so skint that when striker Robbie Turner was injured, Rovers got Mark Johns from Bristol Mannor Farm to repace him for a couple of matches. He scorded on his debut.

Did Bobby really bring GF to Rovers? I thought he was at Exeter, got the sack and was made our manager when Gould left?

Didn’t know Neville Chamberlain played for Mansfield - I guess he wasn’t wearing the number 11 shirt

Randall was indeed a talent at his prime in his second spell but Gould snubbed him read punky book and took a pay cut to enjoy his football and be appreciated at Yeovil; he was 28 scored lots of goals there and later Bath City. Gould wanted the limelight and played to the media signing forner England star Mike Channon and then not playing him but keeping him on the bench. Channon soon gotvwise snd the mind games and left for Norwich City. It was a ridiculous mis management situation.

I spoke to Paul (PRGF) last season. He told me that Bobby Gould said that he would circulate his name to all clubs, but he doubts whether he did, hence giving up professional football at 26, joining Yeovil and Bath.
This was an era before agents.
Unbelievable waste of talent, as he was a great finisher and a brilliant bloke as well.

Saw a charity match in Portishead 10-15 years ago. Bobby Gould was in goal, made a worldie penalty save from Steve Strange (fade to grey) and I had to keep an eye on a member of massive attacks kid for a few minutes. A few ex rovers and city players involved from memory That was a weird day

I was fortunate enough to be signed by BG in 1985 and tbh the club had no money, mainly the reason i was signed. Most of the squad were ex Western league players.Penny,Tans,Smartie & me all previously played for Mangotsfield Utd before Rovers.
The reserves who were managed by Harold Jarman and played in the football combination struggled to raise a side for most games.I remember playing against West Ham at their training ground being marked by the g8 Billy Bonds & we lost 8-1.The difference then was that we were all local lads & played for the shirt.Something nowadays that most players don't care about.
