On Saturday 16th November 2024 The Red Devils visit The Memorial Stadium for a league fixture.
Before this match they have an EFL Trophy game on Tuesday 12th November at Adams Park.
Their Southern Group B encounter is with League Two leaders, Wycombe Wanderers.
AFC Wimbledon have already qualified for the knockout stage from this group.
The winners on Tuesday evening will join The Dons in the knockout stage.
Will The Chairboys choose to focus on the league or will they go flat out to make the knockouts?
Will Crawley Town make League One security their priority?
Whatever the outcome it gives our "spies" an up-to-date assessment of certain aspects of The Red Devils game strategy.

James Trafford called up from the 21s to the seniors. Could mean Josh Griffiths getting called up by the 21s.
Edit* Seems Sam Tickle at Wigan could be next in line.

Looking forward to this game, bread and butter, not potential Dutch owners or overblown gossip!
With Martin looking close to a full return, Shaq and Hutch improving with every game and Taylor/Wilson at the back looking solid - even against set pieces - this could be a perfect opportunity for us to click. We need to create more, and once we do, we'll be a comfortable mid table table side.
3-0 gas

A little bit worried about this one.
A match against a team in the bottom 4 at the Mem is one most will expect us to win.
However, this won't be easy. Crawley are improving, and have only lost 1 of their last 4 games.
They only lost 1-0 at Wycombe a month ago. Matching the league leaders for much of that game.
They recently beat Lincoln 3-0, and on Saturday draw 2-2 with Huddersfield.
They've also scored 14 goals in their last 8 games in all competitions. Averaging nearly 2 a game.
Crawley are a possession based side and are likely to have a lot of the ball. They've averaged 61% possession over their 20 games in all competitions. That includes 73% against Wigan, 69% against Barnsley, 63% against Stockport, 58% against Wrexham, 68% against Bolton, 62% against Mansfield, and 63% against Brighton in the second round of the League Cup.
Hopefully our fans and players stay patient, because as we know, good possession stats don't always win you football matches.

Crawley Town have made 8 changes for the match at Adams Park.
5 of the substitutes started last weekend.
Wycombe Wanderers have made 10 changes.
All 7 of their substitutes started in their Away victory at Wigan Athletic.

Crawley lost 2-1.
Wycombe have reached the knockout phase.
Crawley dominated the match in terms of possession, corners and shots.
We can expect more of the same pattern this Saturday.
The Chairboys did the usual. Win ugly.
Interestingly........
16 Premier League Under 21 teams joined the group phase of the EFL Trophy.
ALL 8 Premier League Southern sides are out.
Only Aston Villa (Edited) of the Premier League Northern sides are in the knockouts.
Another season when the dream draw of TWO Under 21 sides reaching the final has failed to materialise.

Whilst admittedly it's unlikely there's no reason the two northern PL sides can't still meet in the final, unless the rules have changed again and the semi finals are now regional based?

They are a bunch of overpaid kids using lower league sides as training fodder. And we have been told we must, whether we like it or not, play them in this competition, and in a few years play them in our leagues. It's been said before it does no harm to say it again.

They dominate possession against nearly every team they play, avergaing over 61% in their 21 games so far this season. As you say, they also had more shots, more corners, and more touches in the box than Wycombe. Again, this is a regular occurance, but so far at least, these impressive stats have not produced impressive results. Let's hope that continues on Saturday. I just hope our fans are patient, because we're likely to only have 30-40% possession, and we'll spend long periods without the ball.

Under Barton we used to dominate possession - look at how that usually turned out

Under Barton we used to dominate possession - look at how that usually turned out Yeah they’re in the bottom four for a reason. Possession doesn’t win games scoring more goals than the opposition does. On Saturday there were seven winning teams in league 1. 5 of those teams had less possession than the team they beat. This goes back to what I was saying a couple of weeks ago. There’s a massive trend in league 1 of the team with less possession winning way more often than not. One team I can’t remember who now won 5-0 and had possession in the 30s % Crawley having a high percentage of possession average doesn’t scare me and seeing them being in the bottom four doesn’t surprise me either.

The signing of Tyreece John-Jules on a free could be a smart pick up and has the potential to have a positive impact for them once they get him fit and ready. Good pedigree.

Quite simplistic. Possession of the football enables the team to do the things to score the goals. Most possession doesn't guarantee anything so you're right. However, what you do with that possession is what generates goal scoring chances. It is a territory game and most goals are scored from the ball being in the opponents box. By having more possession, it allows opportunity to move the ball more often to goal scoring areas. Being effective in possession isn't simple, because teams are coached to defend sustained attacks. They're also drilled in counter attack, since you can be most vulnerable when in attack due to commitment of extra players etc. If you take it to the extreme, a team with 100% possession will usually win a game, not always but usually. Effectiveness is the key and that breaks up into other stats and action areas, which it appears you and others are ignoring? Time of goal also hugely affects possession stats. For example, a side might race into a 2 goal lead inside 15 minutes then sit in half press for the remaining 75 minutes which gives your losing team 70% of the stat..
