Does anyone know if it is true that the ex-landlord or the Welly gave £5000 to TRASH? If so, why does any self respecting Rovers fan still go there?
It is not take Einstein to suss out that if that money was not paid to TRASH some 2 years ago, the fortunes of BRFC would be a whole lot different now.
If TRASH had dissolved through lack of funds at that time, then that would have saved the club some serious money in legal fees. It could have meant that the UWE stadium may have been started (I believe Sainsburys were still on side at that point) and this would have given the whole club a massive lift.
At worst the club could have spent that money on players to keep us up last year. Due to relegation the club has lost around £500,000 in football league funding and the Community Department have also lost thousands.
As far as i know the Welly, the Victoria, the Inn On The Green, Civil Service Club and the chippy down Glos road do not donate, or sponsor ANY money to the club. Not 1p!!
NB The Sportmans /Annexe IS part of the 1883 sponsors so fair play to them. Why not vote with your feet and go there tomorrow?
I know people have freedom of choice to go where they want (just ask JJ O'Toole!) but if you go to these venues tomorrow, why not ask them to join the 1883 sponsors club and at least get some money into the club. It only costs £1000 and each of the venues above probably make much more than that well before kick off each Saturday!!
In the Welly's case they should pay £5000 to the club at the very least and pledge to offer the profits from the last home game of the season to the Community Department. Or else the fans may start to Geoffrey (ie boycott) and go to Gas supporting places like the Mem/Annexe
Viva Charlie, viva le Gas!

I will never ever spend money in that pub again since I heard this last year and it really does surprise me that others do, as far as I am concerned Rovers fans are giving their money to the enemy rather than the club. I also don't spend a penny on Gloucester Road and I will never step foot in a Sainsbury's again. Rant over

I think you're spouting a load of rubbish unless of course you have something to back up your post. The Welly is run by a manager who is an employee of Bath Ales so no landlord exists as such.

I've always used the Welly and to support the protest at the start of this season the group of 4 that I attend matches with decided to support the gas and use the club bar. As we stand behind the dugout we used the bar under that stand which was serving my favourite tipple Butcombe. To be honest the beer was absolutely crap, they provide about 12 chairs to sit or you have to stand and if it was a pub you wouldn't go in there again. Suffice to say, after a few weeks we decided to return to the Welly where at least we could sit and get a decent pint. I support the sentiment and to add to that I've not stepped in Sainsburys since but a decent beer is part of the match day out. I apologise for drinking there but...

Absolute rubbish, we have been here before with this unsubstantiated rumour. I and many many other Gasheads use the Welly and I am sure will continue to do so unless of course the OP can provide proof that the non existent landlord did indeed pay trash £5000! One thing I know for sure the Manager of the Wellie, as an employee of Bath Ales is hardly likely to have coughed up £5k of his own money to reduce his trade, income and possibly lose his job by doing so. I also note this is only the third post made by the OP, perhaps his time may have been better spent reading back threads on this forum from the past and then he might be a little better informed. For instance is he even aware that diehard supporters of the club held meetings at the Wellie at the start of the season and even held meetings their with club officials! I am quite sure if the allegation he is making is true, none of these events would have ever occurred. Finally looking at MTFC's three posts to date are this one and two items about supporters club events at the Mem. Enough said me thinks!

Is the OP, the landlord of the Sportsman!? Must dash, it's the weekend and I'm starting with a trip to Shamesbury's to get the shopping! It's that or Tesco's and I can't get that 1990'2 home shirt out of my mind when shopping there! Straight to the ice-cream aisle to fill up the trolley first...........................

I don't know if the landlord/manager gave anything to Trash. But it would obviously be in his best interests to keep the Gas at the Mem so that he gets extra trade on the Saturday and the odd night games. . The only thing you can say for sure is that if you want to support the club then use the club bars.
As for the people who say it is rubbish to say he gave anything to Trash, bullsh*t. You don't know any better than anyone else if he did, but as I support The Gas I drink in the bars. That way I know I'm not supporting Trash.

Please accept my apologies for being new to Gaschat and for asking a question that may have been asked before.
I do not apologise for mentioning SC events- If anyone can help them promote things and COMMUNICATE what is wrong with that? After all isn't that one of the committees biggest failings. Damned if you do, damned if you don't I suppose.
I am a Rovers fan and proud of it. I am sure we all want the same thing at the end of day. Anything we can ALL do to help should be done. If you know a fair weather supporter who lives close to you, why not offer them a lift to try and get them to come more often, if you don't usually buy a programme, or a pie, or a pint at the Mem, why not tomorrow, every little helps.
Re the Welly I don't have an axe to grind, I don't go every game cos of the kids and work, but I was told this RUMOUR this week and my mates are not meeting there tomorrow, because someone told one of them this RUMOUR. True or not I don't know - that why I asked!!!
I know thi smay just be hearsay, but I seem to recall that TRASH were asked to show some visibility of their donations and point blank refused. It would not be the greatest stretch of the imagination for a company to spend £5000 to safeguared future income of £ 100,000 plus. A good return I'd say.
Also, is it not true that the manager (sorry for saying landlord previously) has now changed following the earlier rumours?
Even if the RUMOURS are not true would it not be nice for this organisation who have made loads (millions?) since the move the Mem, at least sponsor the club in some way? The 1883 Sponsorship would be such a little percentage of the money spent by Rovers fans. Anyone going there tomorrow, or any other pub near the stadium can at least ask if they would think about it. If we could get 10 new companies to join the 1883 sponsors club, that would generate over £10,000. That could mean we could get A N Other loan signing if needed, for the end of the season that could make all the difference.

That could mean we could get A N Other loan signing if needed, for the end of the season that could make all the difference. The Manager has indeed changed, moved onto another pub,as have several other staff. Quite common in the licenced trade. As was said on an earlier post the MD of Bath Ales rubbished these rumours a long time ago. I would suggest the income for the Welly is boosted by us having 23 plus a couple of other games a year at the Mem, but would hardly think 50 hours trade or so from Gasheads in a year is enough to keep the place going. As a season ticket holder who attends all home games, buys 50/50 tickets, Coffee, Pasty etc and attends FFSC sponsored games in hospitality and does' a two hundred mile round trip for the privilage I feel I am doing my bit for BRFC and where I decide to have my pre match pint is my choice. I would add even after the previous rumour the numbers of Gasheads in the Welly did not decrease and I expect the place to be packed to the rafters tomorrow and will continue to do so as long as we are at the Mem. As regards 1883 sponsorship, how many businesses in the Horfield area do sponsor the Club? Why I would need to ask the Welly to sponsor us is beyond me, surely that is the job of the club, I would suggest our new PR Man gets his ass into gear and tours all local businesses with that intention. Almost forgot the most important bit, the beer is streets ahead of anything the club has on offer!

I dont think its fair to go on a public forum and damage a companies reputation with no evidence. The welly is a great pub My thoughts exactly The thought that an employee of a brewery / pub chain would give more than 10% of their income to a local pressure group, or that a provincial brewery would do the same, is laughable. This says more about the mindset of some fans than it does about commercial reality. Sometimes, I reflect and wonder why we are where we are as a dlub. Read some of the assertions on this thread and you realise why. Happy to be shot down if someone has proof that this "donation" actually happened.
