Nottingham Forest want flying winger Muzzy Carayol on loan - but Boro don't believe he is ready for first team action.
Forest are one of three Championship clubs who are believed to have enquired about the fit-again flanker in recent days but Rockliffe Park coaching staff are not sure he is yet able to step up a gear.
Aitor Karanka yesterday specifically ruled out the wideman's imminent return at Boro and while they will mull over the interest, Boro back-room staff are not sure full competitive action for another club will help right now either.
Carayol, 26, needed cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery after a serious injury sustained away at Bournemouth a year ago this week.
His rehabilitation has been long and slow, and it is only in recent weeks that he has returned to the pitch with one full 90 minutes and a couple of cameos in the Under 21 development team - and observers believe he is well short of the full fitness needed for competitive action.
Asked if Carayol, a £250,000 signing from Bristol Rovers in August 2012, could cope with a first team return, boss Karanka said he thought not.
