Bristol City, Bristol Rovers and Bristol Rugby will not be sponsored by Shepton Mallet Cider Mill's Blackthorn Cider
The Shepton Mallet Cider Mill has announced that its Blackthorn Cider brand will not be renewing its sponsorship agreements with Bristol City, Bristol Rugby and Bristol Rovers, a decision reached by mutual agreement with the clubs.
John Edwards, marketing director for The Shepton Mallet Cider Mill, said: "Blackthorn’s sponsorship of Bristol City, Bristol Rugby and Bristol Rovers has been among the longest-running and most positive in South West sport.
"As a business located in and committed to the South West, we would like to thank everyone connected with the clubs, especially the fans, for their support of Blackthorn Cider and to wish them every success in the future.
"These are exciting times for Blackthorn, which has seen us invest in a number of initiatives including a refreshed brand identity celebrating our Somerset roots and the launch of a new fruit variant, Black ‘N Black, which pays homage to the historical bar call of the South West and which we are now making available for the take home market.
"These initiatives will be supported by outdoor media and PR campaigns in our Bristol heartland followed by up-weighted point-of-sale investment into pubs & clubs over the coming months, all of which represents a significant increase in investment in the brand for our trade customers."
Blackthorn will continue its partnership with Bristol-born darts star Steve "The Bomber" Brown. This will see the return for a second year of The Blackthorn Bomber's Challenge tournament, taking place in pubs across Bristol and beyond.
Bristol Sport, which oversees all aspects of commercial operations for Bristol City and Bristol Rugby, thanked the drinks company for its involvement.
Andrew Billingham, chief executive of Bristol Sport, said: "We have had a tremendously good relationship with Blackthorn over the last few years and thank them for their support.
"As Bristol Rugby move to Ashton Gate and the stadium rebuild begins it is a time of exciting changes and opportunity."
Bristol Rovers stadium manager Ian Holtby added: "We would like to thank Blackthorn for their support over the last ten years.
"We have always enjoyed an excellent working relationship with the company and wish them every success in the future."
