Manager Darrell Clarke is pleased to be back out on the training ground and although we are only two days in he likes what he’s seen so far.
The manager, of course, knows that he will not have the services of Alefe Santos or Alan Gow next season and today spoke about the possibility of bringing in more new faces before the season kicks off on 9th August.
“If I’m honest I’m short of four players and I know what’s needed. There is no rush to bring those players in, and we have to be aware of our budget when making any signings.
“I’m speaking to players all the time but the price does have to be right, because we aren’t going to be spending silly money on anyone. We are in a situation where we can’t do that.
“We lost a great deal of money following our relegation to the Conference and the fact the Bristol Rugby will be playing elsewhere next season.
“We have to balance the books and make sure that the players we do bring in are what we actually want and that they fit the wage structure.”
The manager is running the rule over a number of triallists at present and it may be that he recruits from some of those already training with the club.
“I have ten triallists in at the moment and the game against Cirencester next week will mean I am able to give a number of them a run out. I’ll then be able to make a decision as to whether or not I want to take
any of them on.
“In addition the loan market is another option and I have a great many contacts who I can do business with if necessary.
“I don’t think we have used the loan market to our advantage over the last few years and it’s something I’ll be looking at when I think the time is right.
“At the moment I am pleased with the way the boys are shaping up and we will see fitness levels improve as we go through pre-season.
“I’m fully confident that we will all be ready when the new season kicks off.”
