Manager pleased with how things shaping up
Manager Darrell Clarke is pleased to be back out on the training ground and although we are only two days in he likes what he’s seen so far.
The manager, of course, knows that he will not have the services of Alefe Santos or Alan Gow next season and today spoke about the possibility of bringing in more new faces before the season kicks off on 9th August.
“If I’m honest I’m short of four players and I know what’s needed. There is no rush to bring those players in, and we have to be aware of our budget when making any signings.
“I’m speaking to players all the time but the price does have to be right, because we aren’t going to be spending silly money on anyone. We are in a situation where we can’t do that.
“We lost a great deal of money following our relegation to the Conference and the fact the Bristol Rugby will be playing elsewhere next season.
“We have to balance the books and make sure that the players we do bring in are what we actually want and that they fit the wage structure.”
The manager is running the rule over a number of triallists at present and it may be that he recruits from some of those already training with the club.
“I have ten triallists in at the moment and the game against Cirencester next week will mean I am able to give a number of them a run out. I’ll then be able to make a decision as to whether or not I want to take
any of them on.
“In addition the loan market is another option and I have a great many contacts who I can do business with if necessary.
“I don’t think we have used the loan market to our advantage over the last few years and it’s something I’ll be looking at when I think the time is right.
“At the moment I am pleased with the way the boys are shaping up and we will see fitness levels improve as we go through pre-season.
“I’m fully confident that we will all be ready when the new season kicks off.”

Since when was the budget such an issue? We have signed all 5 of our players on free transfers who all bar Mansell were playing non league football last season. We have got various amounts of money from the sell on from Lambert and Beauchamp and Santos going where we should be reinvesting part of it back into the team. However, yet again we seem to be having to be reliant on picking up freebies.
Can I just make it clear that I am in no way criticising Clarke, far from it as I believe he is the right man for the job and I actually feel sorry for the bloke as I am worried he might be the next scapegoat. I, am fed up of this board trying to do things on the cheap. We pay good money to watch our team and we want to see a team that is going to be competitive next season NOT finishing mid table as I expect us to at the moment. We don't have to go overboard just show a bit of intent at least.
Ten trialists on trial just seems to me like we are having a lucky dip draw to see who is the best freebie availiable.
The fact Clarke keeps on banging about money all of a sudden lately concerns me and he is obviously another puppet for Higgs and co.
Another thing I am slightly concerned about is the appointment of Marcus Stewart as assistant manager. Is he up to the job as last season we were shocking going forward and he was supposed to be coaching him after all. A lot of gasheads seem to be very happy about his appointment. However, just because he used to play for us does not mean he is going to be a good assistant manager. I doubt Clarke would of had much say in whether Stewart was staying or going so he is always going to say that he thinks he has the right coaching team.
Ambition please Bristol Rovers board. Let's live up to our billing as favourites for once.
