Why is Horfield not included on Sainsbury's list?

It is with regret that Sainsbury's must make the following announcement about its planned Wadebridge store.

We can confirm that work on our planned Wadebridge store will not be completed this year.

Over the coming weeks we will complete site work and make the area safe and secure.

We recently announced a small reduction in the number of new stores to be built in 2014 and have with regret decided not to progress plans.

We are hugely appreciative of the support we have received from the community and understand this will be disappointing to many people.

We will be reviewing our programme of new stores for future years and hope to be able to make an announcement about our plans for Wadebridge in the coming months. CORMAC’s highways works will continue and are not directly affected by this announcement.

What for? They have eastville and golden hill. Tesco and Trash are the big winners here.

It does say "these pages show many of our proposals..." rather than "our many proposals" so perhaps not an exhaustive list?
Can't see why it wouldn't be though....

not sure if a list like that, with little hard evidence as to what EXACTLY it is supposed to show, can be very useful in isolation.

It mentions Bath.

Bath only has 3 supermarkets and 2 of them are Sainsbury's, so I'd guess that list is not quite what you think it might be. The Bath one on there could well be the new(ish) one that is already open?

Supermarket takes £92m hit after axing new stores

Sainsbury’s has ditched 15 planned superstore developments at a cost of £92m, after carrying out a review of its property pipeline.

The move is part of a shift in focus to smaller Sainsbury’s Local stores. The retail giant will continue to push ahead with aggresive expansion plans for its network of Sainsbury’s Local stores, with around two set to open a week.

Sainsbury’s Locals will exceed the number of superstores later this financial year, Sainsbury’s says.

Meanwhile Sainsbury’s online grocery sales hit £1bn for the first time during the period.

The retail giant announced the updates while posting interim half-year results on Wednesday, including a 7% rise in pre-tax profits to £400m.

Sainsbury’s plans to rein in capital expenditure

Retail giant Sainsbury’s has announced plans to rein in its development pipeline from next year.

The retailer confirmed it developed one million sq ft of space in the financial year to 15 March 2014, equating to £888m of capital expenditure or 3.4% of grocery sales, down on the previous year’s £1bn, or 4.1% of sales.

Sainsbury’s admitted capital expenditure last year was lower than the £1.1bn figure it had previously advised investors it would spend.

Sainsbury’s said it will hold capital expenditure at around 3.4% of grocery sales this year, before reducing it further to 3% of sales from 2015-16 onwards.

The news comes after Sainsbury’s disclosed a £92m property writedown in November after a review of its development pipeline resulted in it cancelling a number of planned supermarket developments.

Sainsbury’s opened 13 supermarkets and 91 convenience stores last year and said it will continue to open convenience stores at a rate of around two a week this year.

Sainsbury’s announced a 16.3% rise in pre-tax profit to £898m, up from £772m the previous year.

Two of Sainsbury’s main rivals, Tesco and Morrisons, announced plans to scale back their development pipelines earlier this year while beefing up investment in convenience stores and online retailing.

Asda bucked the trend by scaling up its expansion plans for the next five years last month, with a continued focus on supermarkets, while keeping out of convenience and online retailing.

Sainsbury’s to boost spending on mixed-use projects

Newly-appointed director of property notes rise in online and discount shopping as reason for shift

Sainsbury’s is set to spend a greater proportion of its development budget on mixed-use projects with joint venture partners and on refurbishing its estate.

Speaking to Building, Dean Clegg, Sainbury’s newly-appointed director of property, said the retail giant’s estate strategy was changing to reflect the changing landscape in the grocery market, particularly “the rise of convenience and online shopping and the growing challenge from discounters,” such as Aldi and Lidl. Clegg said: “The era of ‘let’s open loads of supermarkets and be as big as we possibly can’ is over.

“The climate has changed […] We’ll aim to bring in more concession space, such as leisure, retail or residential.”

Sainsbury’s is currently developing three major mixed-use schemes in London in joint venture with developers Land Securities, Barratt Homes and British Land, supplementing superstores with leisure, retail or residential uses, including 1,400 homes.

Clegg, who was promoted to director of property from director of store development this month, said Sainsbury’s was looking at “a number of [similar] opportunities, particularly in London”.

He said Sainsbury’s would increase its spend on its existing estate, including rolling out 100 non-food sections selling products like electronics and cookware, while also upping its spend on eco-retrofitting stores to £60m, up from £50m the previous year.

The retail giant will also shift investment from new-build supermarkets to convenience stores this year and plans to deliver circa two convenience stores a week.

Last week Sainsbury’s announced plans to rein in its development pipeline from next year, with the retailer holding capital expenditure at around 3.4% of grocery sales this year - the same level as last year but down from 4.1% the previous year - before reducing it further to 3% of sales from 2015-16 onwards.

Surely you are just speculating, whilst Sainsbury's are cutting back on large store developments there is nothing to say they are stopping building them, having only announced last week they are starting build on a 100 sq ft store in Selly Oak Birmingham, they are still going to spend nearly £1 billion on store developments following the cut backs.

As far as changing the plans for the mem development, can any of us really face going though all the planning sagas again, a mixed use development is never going to rise the £30m we need for the UWE anyway.

If Sainsbury's are pulling out I wonder if Asda are interested in the development as they still seem intent on building large stores, for now anyway.

I am just speculating Toppergas. Without any news what can we do but speculate what is going on?
