Was yesterday's budget the final nail in the Labour Party coffin?
So far I haven't heard a single peep from Labour against the budget. Was there anything bad in the budget at all?
Add on the rise of the SNP and the upcoming boundry changes and it's difficult to ever visualize a Labour government again!

An economist on R5live this morning agreed that most of us will be worse off under this budget but it seems like he's got away with it because he is clamping down on people on benefits which is popular. |

I was just replying because I specifically heard Labour slating the budget so what you are saying isn't strictly true. They were also warned several times for shouting disapproval during the actual reading of the budget. |

Havent had much time to look at budget but , some working tax credits will be cut, car tax will rise again(but on the other hand it will just be removing cuts put in place way back). the temp caretaker of the labour party has said they would have in the main did the same things, she was apparently waiting to kick off over the minimum wage, but couldn't as that was raised a tad, Another way parents will be worse of is that under 25's will have a harder time finacialy, thereby putting pressure on parents to help, to me this is a double edged sword, as it's generally accepted that at 18 you are an independent adult and should be able to fend for yourselves(there are circumstances that make this impossible for some) . im not saying that kids should be cut off at that age as parents help when they can, however at 18 adults should be able to stand on their own two feet and survive , but it seems that with a lack of investment in the 18-25 age group, they will be paid peanuts which will force them to stay at home longer, which in time will lead to adults staying with mum /dad a lot longer thereby in my opinion holding back their ability to mature and cope in the real world, love me or hate me but it's time governments stopped pishing about with pretend apprenticeships looked at the true meaning of this world and bought them back also reintroduce yts/yop, ok unpopular with some but at the same time gave many youngster the chance to prove themselves to employers and gain academics and work experiance ,which made it easier to get full time employment. Also whoever messed with disability benefits needs their balls or clunge slammed in a doorframe and squeezed into a vice, the aim was to cut disability benefits, so how do they achieve it by sending disabled people bac k to work, good idea and liberating for some, however a lot will need workplace support, which is paid mostly by the government, in some cases trhis means a helper to be on hand, so think about it cut 1 lot of *DLA , then replace it with a bigger payment for the employ of a workplace carrer, smoke and mirrors or what, now if we stopped wasting money in overseas aid ,whe would probably be a lot better off as a country **DLA for those who dont know is a monthly payment that varies according to an individuals needs , the idea is that it helps to pay for extra care/equipment/transport costs. that a disabled person needs to meet day to day challenges. or if granted for 3 years and is at the high rate it also allows people to take advantage of the motability scheme whereby the DLA payment goes to motability for a 3 year lease on a vehicle, thereby allowing some to have a basic independance for themselves. |

A flippant summary could be;
if you are in the public sector you WILL get below inflation pay rises,
if you are in the private sector you MAY get above inflation pay rises,
if you are living on benefits (valid or not) then you had better find a job or have benefits reduced.
Some of the pain is offset by the increase in tax bands, depending on your personal circumstances. In practice this is likely to be a nominal amount.
With regards to the Labour party, I think it could be the slow demise and I can't see them back until at least the election after next in 2025. It would take another centre ground leader rather than the left of centre/left wing candidates up for election.

The reduction in the threshold amount for working tax/child tax is a £ucking disgrace.The following is what my daughter was told by her boss today. Current threshold = £6420 p.a. Reduced threshold = £3850 p.a. So deductions will now begin at a figure £2570 p.a.lower. deductions are made at a rate of 41% meaning she will receive £1053.70 p.a.less than she does now,she is on monthly pay so equals £87.81 per month drop. But there is a double whammy because deductions are to be increased to 48%(don't know the date when it increases but you can be sure it won't be long)meaning she will now receive £1233.60 p.a.or £102.80 per month less.Bear in mind these are the MINIMUM shortfall amounts that claimants will have to endure.In effect,all claimants will be getting more deductions solely via tax credit changes than people in the highest tax bracket!!£150k+@ 45%. These are massive reductions to people who are struggling to make ends meet already and just as a final kick in the guts,if you have to stop claiming tax credits for more than 6 months,which could be through poor health of your own, or any of your kids,then you were able to restart work your claim would be treated as a "new" claim and you would only get tax credits for 2 kids,(if you have more) no matter how many you claimed for previously. Oh 1 other bonus for my daughter is she is a nurse so can look forward to a lovely 1% rise p.a.for the next 4 years. This will be a massive stick for labour to beat the Torys with,they won't kick off for a while though because they too have said they would have had to make changes but not as severe. |

Instead of a dangerous lurch to the right, having eliminated Labour as serious contenders, they can now move to the safer middle ground.
Cameron does not want to lose the referendum vote on Europe. He can't be seen as a right-winger who also wants to stay in Europe, so he's moved to the Centre. If Labour weren't fecked, he couldn't have done that, but they are. So he can.
With the loss of so many seats in Scotland and UKIP taking so many of their votes in England, I think Labour are b*ggered for the next 10 years at the very least.
I don't blame Ed. He wasn't a very plausible Prime Minister, maybe, but no-one foresaw the SNP landslide. And also the UKIP vote. 12% of the total vote - many of them Labour voters.
Welcome to a decade - at least - of Tory rule. The Conservatives seem to be pretty popular on here and the other forum, for reasons which escape me on a (*generalisation warning*) football forum populated largely by ordinary working people, but each to their own.

The battle between left and right wing has been going on for generations and will go on for generations unless the minor parties get a lot more traction and start to upset the apple-cart*. Basically, politics in the UK (and other countries I follow like the US) works like this... One party gets into power, spends 8-10 years screwing up one important aspect of running a country and then the centre-ground voters decide they're bored with their incompetence and so vote in the other side instead. How long the other side then stay in power depends on three things: - Their efficiency at fixing the problem
- Their ability to create new problems
- The ability of the opposition to get their act together
And it's true. Labour screwed the welfare system and therefore the economy. Once the Tories got a bit of power they started to fix it, whilst Labour elected someone who couldn't get laid in a brothel. So the Tories succeeded at point one, were helped to succeed at point two by the Lib Dems (although the Lib Dems were screwed by the same thing) and Labour handed them an open-goal on point three.
We wait to see where we are in 2020... but if Labour somehow manage to elect Jeremy Corbyn as leader (who is currently second favourite and backed by the major trade unions) it will be a hell of a lot longer than 8-10 years before Labour win a pub quiz....let alone an election...
*this is the spanner in the works...wide-coalitions never work, so let's hope the electorate stick to a two party system, because if there's eight of them in power recent history in other European countries proves NOTHING ever gets done...

I disagree.......Germany always has a Coalition Government, and they don't seem to do too badly.

In the process of being replaced by PIP - Personal Independence Payments Pip is ok in principle but applied totaly wrongly(just like the poll tax) , Pip has already cause some disabled people to commit suicide, as the so called medical company(think it's still atos) are seemingly not awarding many people pip, but those they are not awarding are those who are the most venerable or the most needing, thereby condemning many to a life of being housebound or struggling as they can no longer afford help or equipment to make their life more independent, this is also lumped in with the new universal benefit, that's coming, new claims are being processed on the new system, the main problem with this is that more people in the dwp will be made jobless as there wont be a need for so many departments dealing with different stuff, homelessness will become more prolific, crime will go up, as it stands under the old system ,say you become unemployed , and are looking for work ,you will claim jobseekers, you should also get help with rent and council tax, now the rent and council tax is normally paid straight to the land lord and council(although it can be paid to you if you ask), so in effect as payment is automated the council computers transfer money to themselves and dwp transfer about 120(ish) fortnightly into your account. The new system does everything and pays all money into your account monthly, problem is it will cause chaos as you will have to then pay the rebates to the council, many many people will when skint dip into that money and get behind on rent etc. The official line is it will help you when you get work as you will be used to getting monthly pay, the reality is most will already know how to live monthly, , but believe me when on benefit you need to be paid fortnightly, as after bills have been paid there is little left so you buy food, you quickly learn to buy the cheapest you can find, not a biggie its food, you also buy fresh veg , which may last the fortnight out. once paid monthly fresh veg goes out the window , so people will end up buying more processed sh**e to eat, you may say ah easy save some money and go shopping weekly, real life doesn't pan out like that , as it will be more difficult to stretch food for the month as the benefit payment will also be lower. Believe me life ain't a ball being unemployed, nothing like you see on these benefit shows, if you live in london it's even worse as they are now moving people from thier accommodation to other cities to save money, again trying to move genuine born n bred londeners to other parts of the country imo to falsify poverty figures etc. Oh and the best bit, the new universal credit and the pip are being screwed up and put on hold as dwp employees cant work the software, i believe they should bring back the old ub40 system whereby you have to physically sign on fortnightly. this was stopped as it was allegedly degrading. It may have been for some but it made people who could work start looking for work |
