He's fully entitled to turn his back on the flag. The IRA did some nasty s*** but the British Army didn't come out of it smelling like roses either. I don't like this Americanesque witchunting of anyone who doesn't pretend to be a patriot.

What I meant was expecting everyone to love England unreservedly.

Some of the provocation that I and others who served over there were subjected to deserve to be taken into account before you throw a comment like that over the wall.

I am an ex serving member of the Royal Navy, I am of Anglo-Irish bloodlines & I am proud to be both English and Irish' although of English birth but in regards to this debate I' personally do not recognise the Union Flag..... My reasons being that I have no Welsh or Scottish ancestry, my flag firstly is a White flag with a Red Cross of St George showing on it. If you think im mad then so be it' I could not give a sh1te!!!

storm in a tea cup.
why would anyone expect him to be interested in the flag / anthem??? It's crazy to expect him to.
I'm English, have briefly served in the forces, my grandfather was a regular in RAF, and my father was almost killed in Cyprus during National Sevice, but I wouldn't have any interest in any type of flag or national anthem.

Football and politics are not a good mix. I believe in freedom of speech. If Mcclean wants to turn his back on the National flag then so be it.

I don't get the big deal? It's not his national flag and not his national anthem.
Would we have expected Becks to sing Le Marseillaise when he was at Paris St Germain? Imagine the tabloid whirlwind if he had!

I think provocation is putting it lightly Phil . . .

Why do all media say he turned his back to it? He just didn't turn toward it. Not a big deal.

Yeah, of course, I'm not saying that it was unprovoked. However, historians will rightly look at the troubles and conclude that both sides committed evil - in the case of the British Army, they'll refer to Bloody Sunday, Ballymurphy and Springhill. Turning his back and not wearing a poppy is McClean's way of remembering the dead. I might not agree with it, but I respect his decision and acknowledge his freedom to do so.

He's not even played here yet... and may not.

Think it should be remembered this game is for big PK. Probably best to leave the politics to Paxman, Johnson, Cameron et al. Boy this country is in good hands!

In an odd way the guy is actually commendable. In an age when footballers are increasingly being known as overpaid, thick, occasionally criminal primadonnas...it's kind of nice to see one who actually believes in something enough to risk his reputation by standing up for it.
