6 of the current top 8 teams are the teams you would expect to be there.

I don't mean fortunate in that it wasn't deserved; I mean fortunate in that it is an INCREDIBLY tough division to get out of. Thank God DC managed to get us up at the first time of asking!

It has proven tough over the years but 6 out of the top 8 being the ones you expect make me question how competitive it usually is. Especially considering the part time teams tend to drop off at the end. Also even though Luton took 5 years to get up they were always there or there abounce.

It's not that the conference is strong, but that 1 automatic place makes it seriously horrible to get out of. And every year it appears to be getting genuinely stronger with the size of clubs dropping down. I don't think we'd have got out of it this year.

Given how easily we demolished FGR in the semi's then unless they've really strengthen their squad to a big degree during the summer I'd say it's not that strong, given that neither Barnet or us are setting Div 2 a light this season so far?
Although Tranmere & Cheltenham are showing it's not an easy division to get into the top 2 places, there's probably not a lot of difference between the bottom 6/top 6 of both divisions?

Fgr had the easiest start, looks like they've a few tough games now and will come unstuck.
I don't think it's a tough league. We were relegated to it mainly by amazingly bad luck when you look back, so we managed to bounce back up. Barnet just needed a good coach and a few decent players.
Most teams relegated from L2 are in serious trouble money wise and very poorly run, tranny, chelt, turkey etc... They'll struggle.

No we weren't, we were relegated because we couldn't manage to finish 22nd or higher in the fourth tier of English football. Luck had nothing to do with it... Failing to win your last 3 or 4 home games and eventually going down because you couldn't even hold out for a draw in your last home game is hardly bad luck? Relegation was probably almost a certainty when JW decided the likes of Beardsley & Gillespie would score sufficient goals to keep us up. As far as the Conference not being a tough league surely the fact we only escaped via a penalty shoot out suggests it's not that easy? Although it does seem there are regularly around 6 strong teams with the rest being alot weaker.

Although it does seem there are regularly around 6 strong teams with the rest being alot weaker. Bad luck just due to the fact we had 9 points more than both teams relegated the next season (we'd have finished 19th), we went down by 1 goal, hitting the crossbar in the last moments, our best player (smithy) out injured for the final games etc... Im not trying to justify us going down, Ofcourse the BOD and management team and a lot of players were primarily to blame, but i was simplifying it down to bad luck to save me having to write loads like I'm doing now! We missed the championship by 1 goal, so I'll have to use that word again 'bad luck' it just seems apt, even though people seem to hate it? We thrashed a load of teams and won via playoffs on pens, it was hairy but comfortably we were promoted, because we were evidently better than all the other teams bar one. How many sporting events have been won/lost in the dying moments? Hundreds, thousands? That doesn't take anything away from the success. I was just saying the teams that were relegated last season and with us the season before might struggle, because they seem to be in an even worse state than we are! They were deservedly relegated because they were absolute dog sh1t throughout the season. Sh1t,my finger hurts now, apologies for the essay!

Bad luck just due to the fact we had 9 points more than both teams relegated the next season (we'd have finished 19th) Not bad luck, we weren't competing in League Two that year, we were competing the season before... had 46 matches to score more goals and didn't, so not bad luck hitting the crossbar in the last moments Not bad luck, should have hit the target our best player (smithy) out injured for the final games Should have planned better before the transfer deadline, not bad luck We missed the championship by 1 goal Again, not bad luck, had 46 matches to get the points and/or goals we needed.

Tranmere slipped though the trap door last season because, like Northampton the season before, Hartlepool managed to survive with a good run at the end of the season. Apart from beating Wycombe we had a shocking run at the end of our relegation season.
As regards our promotion I'm just pointing out the Conference can't be that easy or we'd have run away with the Championship not sneaked up via a pen shoot out.
