And Pompey with their £268k are second only to Wigan (edit) and Millwall in leagues 1 and 2. I thought they'd stopped all the silly overspending?

Paying agents isnt always bad news. If a player is earning £1,000 a week the club has to pay National Insurance on it at 13.8%. If the club pays the player £900 and an agent £100 then you can save 13.8% of £100 = £13:80.
I know deals have been done where the agent has invoiced the club for services rather than the player and this is why. The example is with small numbers, but some of the deals can be very big and therefore Chairmen and Finance Directors are more than happy to pay agents as it can save them money !!!
