when that happens we are then in desperation mode and the pressure of that often ends in us being unable to score whether through bad luck, good goalkeeping or just damn right bad crossing or finishing.
Last night was the exception rather than the rule IMO . In the first 5 minutes a tremendous shot from Mansell brought a wonderful save from the keeper as did another shot in the second half and I thought it was another Exeter where we were going to be held back by a worldly performance from the keeper and Taylor although playing very well missed a very good chance to give us the lead. Had Wycombe's early effort gone in instead of hitting the post would we have won the game ? I'm not convinced. Last night though it didn't and we went on to score 2 stunning strikes from Matty and he completed a very rare League hat trick for a Bristol Rovers player. I am sure somebody will be able to tell me when and who that was but possibly Lambert away at Herford? So I don't think wing backs has solved our home performances as IMO neither wing back excelled and although both often broke forward; Leadbitter more often than Brown; the final decision made was often poor and too often crosses were blocked. In my opinion the big lad (No not Matty and his c--k in the cup)Gaffney made a big difference and of course Matty scored a superb hattrick and gave an exceptional all round performance.
Nicholls 7 Pretty well same as Saturday- didn't have a lot to do but what he did was sound but in much better but no where near perfect weather conditions. Despite ironic cheers when he threw the ball out (not needed at all) I felt he distributed very well but took no chances .
James Clarke 7.5 Overall a good performance other than the odd slack marking. Won a lot of the ball and he looks far more comfortable in a back three as he is a better centre half than full back.
Lockyer 8 Other than a terrible miss judgement in the second half where he allowed the Wycombe player a clear run for goal but managed to redeem himself by getting back and blocking, he had his usual calm and effective game.
Parkes 9 Tom gave another very good performance both in terms of defending and bringing the ball out. Between them the defenders managed to contain the dangerous Martin Hayes and win the majority of second balls when Wycombe won the initial aerial battle. Hopefully he has recovered from his poor performances and is now back to his usual level.
Leadbitter 7 Managed to get down the line pretty well but too often his final ball in was poor similar to Saturday. Some may say he was better than a 7 but IMO his speed is his main quality which can be effective but if he could get his crossing right on a regular basis it could be a stunning performance rather than a pretty good one.
Ollie Clarke 6.5 Started off Ok but for me he is ineffective for long periods and stays far too deep and his distribution is not consistent and often he makes the wrong decision and hard work and the occasional good shot alone is not enough. With a midfield of Mansell and Lines I feel we could try Easter in there to provide a bit of flair as he holds the ball so well and is capable of passing accurately and could be the missing spark in our home performances.
Sinclair 8.5 Better second half than first half. Won so many balls and how does he leap so high to gain supremacy in the air. He is proving that he is good enough in this League and possibly the one above as he is capable of performing from the first to last minute. He is a human dynamo.
Mansell 8 A hardworking performance mixed with some good attacking play and two tremendous shots both of which deserved to be goals if not for fantastic saves from the keeper. I just feel that it is too defensive to have three hard working players in the centre midfield and for me I would put Easter in there as he could;I believe; provide both the ability to hold on to the ball and the creativity that we lack and he could still score the odd goal from the deeper position which he seems to naturally take up when he is played as striker.
Brown 7 For me he is not a wing back and too often runs into trouble and his crossing is either brilliant or poor. He certainly has missed the understanding he had with Monkhouse but the big difference is that a winger generally wants to run the line himself and receive the ball early to run at a player whereas Brown is reluctant to pass a ball early and tends to run the line until he gets to an opponent and so the winger is negated. He did however have a reasonable game and a good second half.
Gaffney 8.5 Good close control, knows what he is going to do and prepared to run at players. He is strong and definitely gives us a different option.Ran himself into the ground and seems to have built an understanding with Matty. Need to see him a few more games but I think he has goals in him because he gets into good position and runs the channels as well. I believe he cost Cambridge hard cash and the problem could be that if he plays well for us and we want him then Cambridge will want money for him or will want him back. This is a problem with loans in that if a player is good on loan he is going to be wanted and if he is no good then we won't want him anyway.
Taylor 10 MOM I don't very often give a 10 but what can you say about this superb performance last night. His all round play was at its best and he led the Wycombe defence a merry dance with his control and skill on the ball. Add to this the main thing that he scored a second half hat trick, two of which were stunning strikes, the other a "fox in the box" goal and who knows if his header went over the line (some thought so) and there was another shot in the first half that he should have scored but delayed and hit just wide. Just a superb, class performance not seen since Lambert days.

Easter 6 Looked class with his ability to hold the ball and bring others in. Personally I would start him in place of Ollie Clarke as I think we could afford to with two hard workers like Mansell and Sinclair, at least it might be the answer for home games to give us more creativity and class.
Cohen Hill 7 In a short time he looks a class player with pace and the ability to beat his man and put in a good cross. I would play him at least at home .
DC Can understand why he kept an unchanged team from Saturday but I don't think this team has sorted the Home problem but not complaining with a great 3-0 win and I think DC is doing a great job overall and don't think any other Manager at this level could do any better.
Ref 6 Another who didn't get his book out and mainly allowed the game to flow which is good but some queer decisions that allowed Wycombe to get away with a lot.
Wycombe 6 A good side , very strong and a little nasty to go with it which makes me think they will stay in the mix but we deserved the win and the second half we were far the better side after an evenly matched first half that we probably edged.
Crowd 8 Got behind the team well and another good sized crowd considering recent home results.
So we have a weeks rest now after 2 good performances and then we have two games which we can seriously go into looking for 6 points but this is Bristol Rovers so who knows what will happen!!! UTG
