Cantankerous Gas, I agree. playing three at the back cost us our league status against mansfield. It is too easily opened up. DC has to sign a couple of wingers so they can do the attacking rather than the full backs . The defence must get defending right first!! No Lee Brown or Michael Smith aswell as our attackers not being able to hit a barn door cost us our league status. 3-5-2 is a very good formation WHEN WELL PRACTISED. I know comparing Van Gaal and Darrell Clarke is ridiculous, but the ability of Holland's team getting third place in the World Cup was to do with a well drilled formation, not the ability of the team. It could be a good asset for us next season, particularly away from home, it means being able to have more numbers in central midfield but no abandoning two men upfront. I hope we use it, I just hope we use it well. Last season didn't work because the players barely had the time to pratice it. We've not had time to practice it now really. We need to see what players come through the door this week now but i've a feeling it coukd be slim pickings. Bloody good to see we are scoring today. Also very good to see Whire score. A win will do the team a lot of good with Coventry next. As long as we keep scoring one more than the other teams then i dont care what we concede. It makes for an entertaining game. Its a very poor crowd for them. I thought they woukd have more.

Just back and thoroughly enjoyed that! I do realise it was only a friendly against lower league oppo but I can confidently say I have not seen that brand of football being played by a Rovers side in years. No hoofball at all, a few long passes which were all aimed rather than punted, very refreshing. Parkes looks lean and half a yard quicker. Higgins needs to be signed ASAP, very promising performance down the right Monkhouse was excellent considering it was his first game in pre season All 3 forwards looked like they had goals in them, showed good movement and nice touches Sinclair will run himself to the ground for us, real fans favourite in the making
Only negatives were in defence. Defending set plays was worrying which is natural for a side with 3 trialists, a new formation and pretty much whole new team. This needs to be worked on. Brown didn't bring his shooting boots with him either and was the quietest of the players out there, looked a bit slow with his passing too. Some shocking defending for Glos's first two identical goals too, Mildy may have saved them though.
Overall all of the new signings impressed and I am looking forward to Grimsby now, I wasn't sure before but IF we can play that sort of football when it counts and tighten up in defence it will be an entertaining season. We have seen this before under Buckle when we were excellent in pre season and failed to live up to it so I'm not getting carried away yet. Well worth the tenner though if only for Parkes's goal, stunning!

We must stick with this formation, like it a lot. Goals came from individual errors not because of formation. Things to work on but we got on the goals trail finally which is very good. Positive signs considering a few players still to come in (and missing through injury)

Like I said defensively we were poor at times, it should really have been 4-1 or even 4-0 if we could defend today. The first two goals were identical with balls played right through the left of our defence with both goals beating the keeper at the near post and the third was a header from a poorly defended corner. All 3 could/should have been prevented. Going forward and on the ball it was pretty good. Get the defence sorted and it looks good. The style of 'we will score more than you' is risky and although entertaining we cannot rely on scoring 3 or 4 every game! Still work ahead but much better performance than I was expecting.

Gashead79, those defensive mistakes will be useful for the manager, better it happens now than in the league matches. With Mildy in goal I think you would of been looking at fewer goals conceded. Set pieces are slightly worrying, but when those goals went in we didn't have the height of Monkhouse, McM or Brunt on the pitch to help defend them.

Absolutely spot on. Just got back myself and agree totally, yes we were fallible 'at times' at the back today but the style of football my lad And I witnessed against Cheltenham, Yeovil and now Gloucester is a revolution compared to the dross we witnessed over the last few seasons. I will go further, I enjoyed today and came away with a smile on my face - something I have not associated with watching the Gas to often of late. McChystal and Mildenhall would have made a vast difference if fit today, Higgins had his best game yet, White showed the sharpness we had all been told about and any lapses by Parkes only seemed to spur him on to make amends twice over. His goal was 30% class and 70% anger. Good, that's what I expect to see from any one privileged enough to wear the quarters. Sign Higgins now Clarke. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Good to hear. Apologies for being hesitant in positivity for now. No apology necessary, we have all suffered greatly as Gas heads and you have to see the change to believe it, but it is there mate, no perfect but a huge step in the right direction. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk And we certainly didn't look two leagues below Yeovil or below Cheltenham, despite being away to both. We completely dominated Gloucester in the first half today and controlled the game. They cliche is that pre season results don't matter, it's how you are approaching games and the performance. Well, so far so good. The Bath/Cirencester games were youth players or trialists.

Thanks to everyone for your assessments on the game. Sounds really promising, if we can nail down this formation and a couple more quality signings, we may be in for an exciting season!
