When did we start calling ourselves gasheads?
When did 1982 Bristol sport franchise (men's football) fans start calling us gas heads?
We've always been the gas since I was going in 92.
I think the gas is a far better name than the Pirates but the Pirates is a cool thing for a symbol and is good marketing for the club.
It's also linking us to the actual city, as opposed to the other lot who seem to mainly represent farming folk throughout the county of Somerset.

Not sure what you are trying to suggest, fans starting signing "we're the pirates" instead of "we're the gas" etc? He doesn't have the same ring to it in my view! Using your logic we should also stop singing "Irene" as we took that from the Plymouth fans in the 50's?

I am probably in the minority, but I far prefer "Pirates" which reflects the maritime history of our great city.
We were The Pirates long before the name chosen by our local rivals. Furthermore, with the superb manager we have, I hope we are a club on the rise. If so, we should, in my view, carefully consider our brand and how appealing the term "Gashead" might be for new fans.
That being said, I appreciate we have a loyal core fan base who will not share this view.
Cheers
Somerset Pirate
PS - not all of us now living in Somerset support City!

They're both cool names but I feel more gas than pirate!

So you say "Yes, we'll go along with that", and adopt it as your own. At the same time, you openly call them 'S**theads'. They don't say "Yes, we'll go along with that", (unfortunately), but - touche - you've won! Ask a lower-league footy fan "who are The Gas?", and I reckon most would say Bristol Rovers without hesitation. Ask them about The Pirates, and they'll have to stop and think. And finally (sorry, I've been watching The Two Ronnies), whilst our mascot looks such a pratt, I reckon it's best to forget the Pirate connection.

With regard to mascots, have to agree, ours is a bit embarrassing. The old Captain Gas was better. Have to say though, there are far worse. The shrimp for example, and the swan! At the end of the day though they are just a bit of fun, and the kids like them.

Born in Bristol before moving to Taunton area in 70s. In Taunton area there were always more City than Rovers but there were small group of Pirates who travelled up for home matches.

I was on a train in Sydney heading out the Olympic stadium in 2003 (rugby world cup) and got talking to a bloke from Dover. When I said I supported The Rovers he immediately said "you're the lot who sing Goodnight Irene". I asked how he knew. He said everyone knows that.

The Pirates works better with kids Young Pirates etc as does the Mascot something they can identify with, maybe you are a bit big for that now? The gas is an adopted name that's a bit more gritty for us big kids.
