Not sure what you are trying to suggest, fans starting signing "we're the pirates" instead of "we're the gas" etc? He doesn't have the same ring to it in my view! Using your logic we should also stop singing "Irene" as we took that from the Plymouth fans in the 50's? ? I have no idea, re-read it dude I'm not suggesting anything! They're both cool names but I feel more gas than pirate! Yeah same, I've never shouted " come on the Pirates " !! At a game. I've never even referred to us as the Pirates other than when explaining that The Gas isn't our official nickname when talking to someone who questions why "The Gas"

I do actually think that The Pirates is a pretty good nickname though, I mean some little pathetic festive Robin is no match for a big sweaty arsed Pirate is it ? What a crap nickname The Robins is.

Your rivals try to extract the Michael by calling you Gasheads, because of the smell of gas that often hung over Eastville. So you say "Yes, we'll go along with that", and adopt it as your own. At the same time, you openly call them 'S**theads'. They don't say "Yes, we'll go along with that", (unfortunately), but - touche - you've won! Ask a lower-league footy fan "who are The Gas?", and I reckon most would say Bristol Rovers without hesitation. Ask them about The Pirates, and they'll have to stop and think. And finally (sorry, I've been watching The Two Ronnies), whilst our mascot looks such a pratt, I reckon it's best to forget the Pirate connection. The Pirates works better with kids Young Pirates etc as does the Mascot something they can identify with, maybe you are a bit big for that now? The gas is an adopted name that's a bit more gritty for us big kids. that hits the nail on the head really....
'the pirates' is the official more marketable front of rovers, as where 'the gas' is the not so marketable voice of the terrace....
both are historical, both are necessary....

I am probably in the minority, but I far prefer "Pirates" which reflects the maritime history of our great city. We were The Pirates long before the name chosen by our local rivals. Furthermore, with the superb manager we have, I hope we are a club on the rise. If so, we should, in my view, carefully consider our brand and how appealing the term "Gashead" might be for new fans. That being said, I appreciate we have a loyal core fan base who will not share this view. Cheers Somerset Pirate PS - not all of us now living in Somerset support City! I wonder what the media would make of us reverting to the Black Arabs? Lol, would raise our profile in the middle east.

I don't get it. who are you calling a liar? Sorry Pete, I was being dry. Clearly everybody knowing our song is a stretch. It's cool when stuff like that happens though..I was on the Hoover dam a few years ago with my shirt on and someone shouted "up the gas" from across the way! I was chuffed.

I'm quite happy with both, interesting discussion.
To be fair for some reason I randomly fancy a tattoo and a pirate or pirate themed tattoo just looks great. I would struggle to encapsulate "gas" on my arm - a gasometer or a Bunsen burner?
Pirates as a club logo and pirate themed merchandise is excellent and might make us far more appealing to kids if we were to ever compete on a level pegging financially with our nondescript rivals. Other than lacking funds and stadia, we are just cooler - better mascot and logo, better kit, unique own song. It's also cool that pirates, as well as just being cool, is a direct link to the city we respresent - our collective heritage is at sea.
Gas is a unique name which came about more recently and is related to the bread and butter of local rivalry. It's only something you understand if you actually go and engage in the fabric of the club and the history.
Anyway, getting a bit pseudy....we've got so much folklore at this club, long may new chapters be written, and all that.

Given the club's well publicise marketing failures (or perhaps even because of it?) we're probably one of a limited number of clubs with a number identifiable nicknames etc, with the Pirates, the Gas/Gasheads, Irene and the quarters? Not sure there's another club who can compete with that number?

The Club continue to miss the opportunity to exploit the Pirates commercially as they seem to prefer their insular ways.I have recently sent E-mails to Brookman and Hood regarding matchday music and guess what, neither of those ignorant employees bothered to reply. This is an ongoing theme from BRFC judging by many previous posts and it conveys a message to me that they just want your gate money and off you f-ck.

I think we should run out to the Captain Pugwash theme tune. Honest.
Maybe this techno'd up version would get everyone jigging.
