The main armour defeating round of the challenger 2 main battle tank is the armour piercing fin stabilised discarding sabot APFSDS and is referred to as "fin" in the fire order. Alternatively we have the high explosive squash head HESH which has a much slower velocity and used against softer skin vehicles and bunkers. Now can we change this thread title to boring rather than interesting! But did you know that the RAF Tornado is the first plane to use the Notch Aerial system which is the aircraft has no external aerials "stuck out" but uses the aircraft body as the Aerial... I'll get my coat I do know the nato stock number for tornado nose cone paint, a substance that has your boots looking like black glass, saving weeks of bulling!

Wasn't it the preference for HESH that meant we chose rifled when most others chose Rhinemettal smoothbore?

I used to enjoy bulling boots, it was one of the few things that would make me calm when i was younger, for me it was a kind of challenge, also used to love the idiots that used klear floor polish before a drill or parade, especially when it then started raining, i still have a massive lump of scar tissue on the top of my foot where i folded a pair of combat highs wrong and the tongue removed all the flesh over the course of a weekend.

I had to bull the boots during training. However, I was a gash hand at it, so my mate did mine and I did some of his ironing. Scratch my back and all that. Oh yeah, the idiots who used Klear...ha, ha ! Oh, and we wore those white Pith helmet thingys, and they are kept white by dabbing on white emulsion paint. Yep, emulsion, so not good for the smart Blues if it rains. I don't know if it has changed now, but if it did rain in my day we had to wear the white peak caps instead.

What's happened to GGMI's profile? With 5,000+ posts he's now "Gas" status and 10 stars. This makes him a semi God-like figure. Mind you, that's how I've always seen him anyway.

The space shuttle was a result of the third reich's secret weapons program

If the reports are true then by going it alone and a government thinking all will be well with others wanting our wares, we have what was a world beater being seriously hampered by a gun which nobody else wanted and we now have problems buying ammunition for. In the meantime, much of the rest of the world bought German and are very happy with it with no supply problems and the latest Leopard 2 model being amongst the best. Lulworth may be willing to confirm or not due to his closeness it may be off limits for him. Anyway, thread drift. What was this topic about again?

I think the short sighted burecrats went for rifled due to the stock pile of HESH cutting about Europe. Still using that and smoke dated from the 70s! Come unstuck during Iraq though as we were unable to use anyone elses ammo which is starting to cost now. Went to BAE systems in Wales to check out the ammo production line. i was shocked to see a few ladies nearing pension age sewing bags of cordite up! It had an element of bristol Rovers grotto ratther than multi national arms peddaler about the place!

Longest tank on tank kill was from a British Challenger during desert storm. Probably not achievable with smoth bore but then smoth bore allows you to fire all sorts of nasty stuff that we cant with our rifling. Was talk of converting to smoth bore as part of the CR2 life extension but the turret would have required a complete refit as their one piece ammo wouldnt fit in the current stowage which is configured for our 3 piece ammo. Im gettin a right gunnery lob on right now! i should get back to work but im enjoying my tax payer funded gas chat session to much!
