Here in Germany, amongst my football loving German friends, there is the general feeling that he is not as good as it is claimed. Is he really one of the best coaches in the world?
He walked into the job at Barcelona, after having a good playing career and managing their 'B' team, but to be fair, when you have Messi, Iniesta, Xavi etc, playing at their peak, it must be pretty easy? Then he goes to Bayern. At Bayern, to win the Bundesliga and the German Cup is a given, but he didn't do anything more than that. He didn't even reach the Champions League Final with Bayern. As Bayern won four trophies (including the Champions League) the season before he joined, it could be argued that he has actually been a bit of a failure at Bayern! OK, I understand you cannot win the Champions League every year, but he failed to even reach the final.
Plus, he turned Bayern into a tippy tappy team. Possession of the ball is everything, but German fans are a bit like British fans, and find this type of football boring most of the time. It is also felt that the management team at Bayern are not that unhappy that he is leaving either. They believe that not only should Bayern win, but they must have a certain style about it, and they are aware that Bayern are now boring the pants off people. There was a game towards the end of last season where they actually completed well over a thousands passes in the game. Yes they won, but christ, it was boring.
Next up is Man City, and no doubt they will spend even more money to please their new Coach. Is he very good, or is he just lucky to have landed these plum jobs where he doesn't have to worry about resources?
