Most German houses have a 'cellar', but it is not just a dark dingy room at the bottom of some stairs. Basically, it's another floor to the whole house, and is in fact only 'half submerged' so there are small slit windows down there. My cellar has four separate rooms and a bathroom. One room is the wash room, for the washing machine, tumble dryer and hanging space (if needed). It also houses the water boiler/heater thingy. Another room is the guest Bed Room. Then there is a small Living Room complete with sofa, tele, sound system etc, and the fourth room is just the junk room where junk is stored, and of course, there is a bathroom. It's another floor to the house and something they should start doing in the UK. |

The definition of an 'attic' doesn't exist here as that space would be utilised, as it is basically another floor, but with a sloping ceiling. Your standard three bed house in the UK has only two floors. The same house in Germany would have four. Far more living space in the same footprint. |
