Here are some things tax pays for: Bombs for middle Eastern children who wander on to one of the oilfields we want control of. Massive payments to corrupt African dictators. Vast sums to prop up failed banking businesses whilst the common rotter pays the bill. BMW M5s and 3 series for police to sit around on motorway bridges pointing cameras at you etc. Planning officials which decide who is allowed to fulfil their God given right to build a home for their families on private land. Massively incompetent civil and public services. A meagre health service which only provides good quality rapid care for serious illnessss, with anything less than life threatening often requiring extra private funding. A pensions system systematically robbed over decades providing barely enough for old folks to heat their homes and eat. I'm not too sure on why tax is such a sacrosanct thing - it's required no doubt but so many unwanted things get wrapped up in it. When they want your money from your pay its all about being egalitarian, the welfare state, the NHS. Don't mention the corporate wars when they have their cheque book open! So, when people avoid some of their tax, perhaps they're paying the NHS bit, but withholding the bombs and bullets funding? This scam has been going for years. The sheriff of Nottingham wanted his taxes - presumably most of the serfs were policing each other as we do nowadays? Or have they got so clever at this racket they've got us demanding the sherif of Nottingham gets his full revenue, and were shopping both Starbucks and scroungers these days.... I.... Has it crossed your mind that if people paid the tax they were supposed to, we'd be able to pay for things like decent public services, our NHS etc. etc.? Do love a Gaschat politics thread, it usually spirals into stuff like this and then gets moved to General Chat. I look forward to it. We pay higher taxes here than in most of the developed world. Whatever we pay is never enough. Have you ever known a time when public services weren't "stretched to the limit"? Even in the Blair years where funding was greater, they needed more. They always need more money. More more more, much like tax dodgers. More money for them to spend - usually on uncompetitive pay, pension and working benefits to their staff, or just wasted on pointless things as listed in my previous post. You can't divorce politics from a tax discussion I'm afraid.

Rant over

That's the point though, isn't it? The Al-Quadis are Jordanian, they have made their fortune in Jordan and therefore their liabilities are to the Jordanian government and exchequer. Saint Sir Steve on the other hand is British. He has made his fortune through his business in the UK. He already has form for tax avoidance by being domicile in Guernsey, so I think there's every likelihood of him having made use of offshore investment opportunities to further "avoid" his tax responsibilities. This is very selfish of him when you think about it. By his actions he is directly depriving the supporters of his "beloved" Bristol City ( Bristol(City) Evning Post) description, of vital benefits and other state handouts. No doubt meaning that many of the waifs and strays of South Bristol have to go without their milk because Daddy (if he can be found) has spent the money on match tickets ann the 3 Lions. Think you are confusing illegal tax avoidance with clever, legal, tax accounting, linking SL to the Panama tax fraud w/o a shred of evidence is a dangerous game. Tax avoidance isn't illegal, tax evasion is.

Tbf......if he avoids or evades, he'll always be a lady garden either way imo. Yeah, he's a sheed. I don't really get why people flock to his defence over the tax thing. This is a Gas forum and taking the p**s out of sheeds should fly, generally. People seem to get their political cok on to trump Gas vs sheed stuff as soon as the tax thing comes up. Why? We get stuff like this:
He's a thick sheed. Yeah, thick sheed. He's a thick sheed with 6 fingers. Yeah, thick sheed with 6 fingers. He's a thick sheed with 6 fingers who farks his sister. Yeah, thick sheed with 6 fingers who farks his sister. He's a thick sheed with 6 fingers who farks his sister and is a complete knob. Yeah, thick sheed with 6 fingers who farks his sister and is a complete knob. He's a thick sheed with 6 fingers who farks his sister and is a complete knob who I wouldn't p**s on if he was on fire. Yeah, thick sheed with 6 fingers who farks his sister and is a complete knob who I wouldn't p**s on if he was on fire. He's a thick sheed with 6 fingers who farks his sister and is a complete knob who I wouldn't p**s on if he was on fire who takes baby goats out to a lonely field in the dead of night on a full moon and sacrifices them to the dark gods amid baleful, blasphemous, profane rites. Yeah, thick sheed with 6 fingers who farks his sister and is a complete knob who I wouldn't p**s on if he was on fire who takes baby goats out to a lonely field in the dead of night on a full moon and sacrifices them to the dark gods amid baleful, blasphemous, profane rites. Blimey, steady on, there!

If evidence were the deciding factor none of the threads we all like to comment on would even exist! Lansdown is Sh1thead in Chief, and therefore a legitimate target for as much p1ss taking that can be dreamed up.

Due to the people involved, this will largely be swept under the carpet soon enough, much like the unforgiveable MPs expenses scandal..

Because the forum doesn't protect you from being sued for libellous comments should SL decide he wants to make an example of a poster, don't forget the OS was closed because fans started making accusations which were considered unfounded. Although thinking about it were comments are meaningless anyway as you are accusing SL of having his money "offshore" when in fact he's now based in Guernsey so all his money is effectively offshore anyway!

I presume that with all this discussion about tax evasion / avoidance that everyone also has it in for everyone builder / mechanic / hairdresser / taxi driver etc that does a cash job? I'm going to probably guess not but what they are doing (& probably all of us are accomplices to) is illegal tax evasion and cumulatively will amount to huge sums just like the multi-millionaires & multi-nationals legally get away with through tax avoidance. There certainly would be enough tax raised if everyone was honest when it comes to paying their taxes. But frankly the tax code in this country (& probably every other country) is far too complicated and allows people at all levels to get away without paying taxes but no government in this country, of whatever political persuasion, has ever wanted to tackle this issue, each one will nibble at the edges & claim to have done more than the others but it's only playing to the masses (ie us).
In saying that Lansdown only left for Guernsey because Labour raised the highest rate of tax, even the staunchly left wing Nicola Sturgeon has accepted if you raise the highest rate of tax you actually get less money in then again perhaps she is just cleverer, or less inclined to make an expensive political gestures at the taxpayers expense, than Gordon Brown & Alistair Darling.

Ok. As a public servant, and someone that investigates and prosecutes organised crime fraud and 'little people' fraud, and who for many years investigated major international drug smuggling by individuals and some very nasty organised crime types I'm only going to say this once. Public servants are not lazy, or incompetent, or enjoying massive pay hikes, or huge salaries, or massive gold plated pensions. They are, for the most part dedicated individuals battling against stupid managers, many from the private sector with their pink and fluffy ways. This is real down and dirty work, paid for by your taxes (and by the taxes of people like me, don't forget, we don't work tax free). Tax evasion is a crime and you can get serious time for it. Tax avoidance is something that huge PRIVATE run firms make millions from. Some singleton tax evaders like plumbers and double glazing salesmen have it away with hundreds of thousands of pounds. Money that could, and should be spent on the health service schools etc. Buying dodgy duty free fags or cheaps from the local newsagents puts cash into the likes of IS and other organised crime groups, drug smugglers and terrorists. No fraud is victimless, and tax fraud and money laundering is a pernicious attack on your society. End of lesson.
