Be an insult to Browner if Smith got to just walk back in after leaving us in the sh!t.
No chance would I want Smith back. You didn't wanna stick around to put things right, so now f**k off!

I'm of the old adage that you need at least two players in a squad for one position. Not a utility as 'the' back up player. When he was here Smith developed at a fast rate after his first full season. Likewise Leadbitter to an extent but What pair of right backs we would have if Smith joined! And how would they both be kept happy? How do you know if one/both would be unhappy? All hypothetical of course but I would leave that to the main man. Darrel Clarke done a damn good job this and last season keeping people happy with his tinkering. If he foreseen a problem with any future targets, they wouldn't be signed I would have thought.

UTG although I understand why he was too good for conference football and all that, he was part of the team that got us relegated and I agree he can f**k off.

Think that's harsh. Whilst I'm delighted Brown stayed, and wish Smith had too, they both worked hard in the relegation season and gave their all unlike some. Wouldn't have begrudged either of them a move. Am I imagining it, or did DC start to push Smudge into the right side of midfield during the last few games of the relegation season. I can remember thinking that we looked a really good side with him playing rightside of midfield. He was having a great game at Pompey (one of the last few games that season) until his hamstring went and then we looked awful.
I would have him back
You are right he did push Smith into wide right midfield but I thought he looked like a fish out of water. It looked to me he couldn't adapt. A bit like when Lee Brown went wide left a couple of times, they totally lose their positions and drop too far back.

UTG Bit harsh, he made the move to better his career and at the time, to a Posh team that were expected to be fighting at the top of league one. I'd have him back instead of James Clarke if it suited our budget. As others have mentioned, Jon Taylor would be a good addition. Bags of pace and has goals in him. Can play wide or central too

I seem to remember that there were rumours that Smith would leave the season before he did. He signed a new two-year deal and that meant Posh had to pay us a fee for him.
Towards the end of that season he was the only player who looked capable of creating anything. Certainly can't blame him for our relegation. Don't blame him for leaving as there is no way he'd have got the NI call-up if he'd stayed with us.
However, RB isn't a position we really need strengthening with Leads, Clarke and even Lockyer as cover so I wouldn't sign him.

I'm going to buck the trend here and say that we should definitely go in for him. He was far and away our best player in the relegation year and a very good pro in the mould of our current group. If we had him back I think he'd be first choice right back and would strengthen our team.

Strange one this Seemingly club policy, what's the betting the new manager promptly offers him a new contract and takes him off the transfer list, or failing which P'boro wnnat a decent transfer fee for a player potentially playing at the Euro's? As far Smithy leaving us in the lurch didn't his transfer fee help us with the blow of relegation and allow DC to rebuild the squad?

I would be interested.
Leadbitter is great. Smudge is good.
Let's have all the best RBs

I think I'm leaning towards the no thanks camp when the chips were down in 2014 he couldn't wait to get away although I agree he is/was a good player!

I just think that signing him is completely unneccessary. He's a good player but I think Leadbitter's pace gives us better balance with the solidity of Browner on the other side. Also signing Smith would mean we would have 4 players who could play rb. It's a tight knit group we have her, there is no need to unneccessarily upset that. In fact, rb is probably our least required position.

Let's go forward not keep going back Agree, unless we're talking about Panache massage parlour in Clifton. Generous discounts for repeat offenders customers....apparently.

Have most people forgotten James Clarke, who played 40 games for us (more than Leads)?

Big NO from me, Leads will be a far better player long term than someone over the hill now
