I know some of you have "gas" registration plates. I have managed to get one too, not a brilliant one as all the best ones gave gone!
Anyway here is my question. It says on one of the many forms, if you want to retain your old number you need form (whatever) and a fee of £80. Now should I do this (I don't want to)
BUT if in the future I sell the car if I don't retain the original registration, will I lose my Gas plate? I'm not sure you can sell a car with no registration .
Answers please.

I think that you need to retain the original registration, otherwise it is really difficult to keep the GAS plate if/when you sell the new car.
I just bought a car which, when I saw it first, had personalised Plates on it. The owner told me that they had retained the original registration (an 06 plate) specifically to be able to re-register the car and keep the personalised number when he sold the car.

You can put the registration number on retention (i.e. save it for future use) or transfer it to another car. You will, probably, get given back the original number of your current car when you do this. I had a personal plate on a car for a number of years, and when I put it on retention, I was given back the old registration to put back on the car before I sold it. All the info you need should be found here - www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registration-numbers/transferring-a-registration-number

No. on which you should not release until Buyer has paid for it. You get a new Reg. Plate for the car you've taken GAS Plate off of; usually the same as 1st registered when new. The DVLA Docs. can be printed off, so you can sell the Old Car. Original Docs. take 3-5 days to come from DVLA, much quicker than if you're selling a car normally. I have a GAS Plate for sale, what I believe is one of the "briliiant ones"! - see Gumtree or Selling Hub on FB. Search for "Personalised Plate" rather than Gas, as you're not allowed to misrepresent of course...
